I have tried to give these speakers a chance in several amps, but I have HAD IT with their 10" speakers. In my personal opinion they SUCK! They really do! I recently picked up a killer little 1974 Princeton Reverb with some sort of Eminence (sp?) no name series speaker in it. It sounded fair, but I snagged a Weber 10F125 out of my Vibrolux and popped it into the Princeton and OH MY GOSH what a tone! The amp opened right up and came to life. It seems that anyone in their right mind would keep that speaker in there and call it a day, but I am too fond of that particular pair in the Lux so I put it back in after playing at church last Sunday.
Since I am low on guitar fun money and didnt want to wait for weeks on a new Weber I cheated on Weber and bought an Italian Jensen C10Q after being convinced by my amp tech that they sound great in a Princeton. At $44 brand new I bit.
I realized that the speaker isnt broken in yet, but I also know there is no way in the world it is going to break in to the point I will be pleased with it.
The Jensen is brittle, shrill, weak sounding, flubby, farty and raspy sounding. It is literally the polar opposite of the Weber! I knew better and still went ahead. I guess I am just lucky it was only $44.
Here is something else I thought about too. Speakers are one of the most critical elements in an amp IMO. If I knew nothing about Fender amps and in this case the Princeton Reverb and tried the amp with the Jensen I would have walked away thinking to myself that I am not a Princeton Reverb guy.
With the Weber in there it sounds JUST LIKE a mini version of my Vibrolux with nice and warm tone thats bright, but not brittle, bass that is bold without being overbearing and certainly not flubby. At higher volumes the breakup is smooth and not shrill. Again, the Weber IMO would get the nod from anyone I know compared to the Jensen.
Old Jensens are killer and maybe other Jensens are cool, but the Italian 10's just make me want to puke!
