Check out the melodic lead in the link in my sig, tell me what you guys think!

I know I messed up timing wise on the beginning, but it was the best take for everything else.

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

dont take this the wrong way, but i think your trying to run before you can walk.

those faster runs sounded a little weak and slightly out of time, slow em down a bit and get your hand a bit stronger then rip at em, and get some rock vibrato on that high note!

note choice wise it was quite nice but i think you went over board on the bass on the rythm and the lead tone was a little "small" (compressed?) sounding.

its good but what i'd do is back off the bass a bit from the rhythm, and double track it - or if you want it to sound huge quad track it.

also have a little bit of delay or reverb on the lead tone so it doesnt sound too dry

you got potential dude :) i hope you dont take what i said offensively i mean it as constructive critiscism

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

What nuntius is saying is probably true, but still . . . pretty darn good for a 13-year-old.

I'm still trying to play like that. ;)

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Dude, I cant get over how you can play like that at 13, YOU ROCK!!!!
You have so much potential, out of couriosity how may hours a day do you practise??

Back to the clip, it was out of time in quiet a few places and the rhythm was wayyy too bassy, but you have a lot of years to improve timing so i wouldn't worry tooo much about that considering......

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Thanks guys. I need to spend more time with my metranome, or just have a backing track for drums! This rythm track was a one take.

Y2Stevo, I've been playing about 2 years now, and practice of an average of 4 hours a day. I also learned playing thrash metal, a la SLayer, and all of the bands I listen to have crazy solos and all.

Coming soon is an all original song, and I might even have drums if i can figure out how to record my drum program!

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Thats roughly where I hope to be at my 2 year marker. Out of curiousity man, What kind of stuff were you playing at about 6 month mark? Thats about how long I have been playing. And Im still struggling with stuff like "Call of Ktulu", the solo portions of "One". Although I have been working on alot of blues improv soloing with the band I jam with. Would be interesting to hear what level you were at. But honestly though man, for 13 years old you thrash like a bat out of hell. Good job man, Cant wait to see what stuff your pushing out when your my age.

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Let's see...at 6 months I was probably still playing Blink 182 LOL!

I really hadn't gotten into Slayer untill about 5-6 months after I started playing, at which point my picking hand had to relearn guitar. In February 2 years ago, the band I was in played Slayer's Reign In Blood and Black Magic combined, like they do live, and then I had been playing about 7 months. So my trem picking was just becoming solid, and my fretting hand could keep up with the riff's. Keep in mind, that I hadn't mastered Reign In Blood's spidercrawl riff, after the 2nd intro, the 5320643053206430 part. That, I just played the root note powerchords on.

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Brutal honesty (don't read if you're easily offended):

When I first listened to that, I got a confused look on my face and recoiled a bit. When I've heard you jam on Yahoo, you were much better than you were in that clip, but when I've heard you jam on Yahoo, you've been pretty much playing other people's songs. You're following the same path that most shredder kids I know do, and that's getting a whole lot of technique in moving your fingers around, but loosing your sense of what actually sounds good. You're so caught up in all the little techniques, the obscure points of theory, timing, that you neglect to just kind of sit back, listen to the piece and see if it truly does have a nice melody. I contend, that your piece didn't. Specifically I noticed that the first 2 notable bends (before 6 seconds) both seemed to go out of key, as in you didn't bend fully to the note you were attempting or you overbent. Periodically throughout the song, it sounded like you were just simply out of key totally, and not paying any mind to the timing. The bit from 13 to 20 seconds sounded good, in key, in time, no mistakes etc. But besides that, there were really some sounds that just clashed on an overt level.

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Sounds great deadskin! Don't listen to these guys haha.. seriously, good job. If you can play like that now, then I am sure that you will be waaay better one year from now. When you are 15 you will probably be one of the best shredders around Ventura in your age bracket. When you are 16 I'll come and see you at the Ventura Theater :D

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Is it just me, or when you start recording, does your sense of time and some chops go right out the window?

Thanks waste, listening again i know exactly what you mean.

Stevo, If I get to the Ventura theater even playing rythm, I'll have surpassed my goals 10 fold...Just no good musicians that play melodic death metal around here. Oh well.

I have a friend that plays there every few months. His band recently opened up for the Animals and later Y&T? I think it's Y&T  old school and older school stuff :D

Re: Melodic Lead (1st original)

Yeah, one of the local bands here opened up for Thin Lizzy when they came around last december. Malmsteen played in February, and one of the guys I used to play with got a gig there last month in a hardcore band. If you can scream, play in drop-C, and sing about getting dumped, you can get a gig around here no problem. But, if you want to play in E, faster paced, actual melodies, and more thrashy vocals...no way.
