Mesa\Boogie DC 5 combo experience?

K guys, I saw a used Mesa\Boogie DC 5 combo at a local music store(not GC), for $600 bucks, it was flawless in appearance except for a 1/2 inch long cigarette burn on the top, behind the handle. I was in a hurry, and doing a quick scope of the joint so I didn't get a chance to plug in, but I did a little google search of reviews, and now I can't get this thing out of my head. Of course I would put it through it's paces before purchase, I just wondered if any of you have had experience with this combo, and if this is a good price. So whacha think?

Um,....where did you say it was?

LOL!

I like them, they got rave reviews from everyone when they came out, and I still think they are one of the best amps around for a guy who's doing a wide variety of material in a club cover band.

They are 60 watts and they will get plenty loud--the LEAD CHANNEL is from the Rectifier Series, and the Graphic gives great power to shape your tone. The CLEAN channel is based on the Mark IV design.

I've been looking for a good deal on one for years, but found my Mark III and Mark IV combos--so now it would be a bit redundant for me. But I do have a DC-3 and it is a terrific amp too.

These Mesas are great amps to listen to--if you ever want to hear the differences between EL84s and 6L6s, sit down with a DC-3 and a DC-5 side-by-side for a few minutes.

My advice: if you want a good, reliable amp with a lot of tone and charisma--the DC-5 is a great way to go.

Yep, I am starting to really enjoy mine. But man is it picky about settings... Ive had it for ~3 months now and I am just starting to get the sounds I want.

Yeah, the tone controls actually WORK on these amps!!! It's a good idea to occasionally review the Owner's Manual--Mesa includes some really good baseline settings. The Manual shows how the controls work very differently--like how the MID control on the CLEAN channel starts adding GAIN when turned above 5.

And sometimes you find an amp that just intrinsically sounds good--even though you might not be getting the EXACT tone you're looking for--and I would put Mesa amps in that category.

A few months after I got my Mark IV 112 EVM combo, I played it at a jam session, and the control settings were totally messed up. Of course, the stage was dark, and I couldn't see my settings--and with all those knobs....aaach! Finally, I just said screw it and PLAYED, even though my tone was NOT what I wanted.

And of course, when I finished playing, three other guitarists came right up to me and told me, "...how wonderful that Mesa sounded!!!" So, I guess it didn't sound that bad! LOL!

But when you get it set to your liking, that's when the magic happens. There's nothing like walking walking off the stage knowing that you've played, and sounded, your best. It is glorious.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I am gonna roll the dice and nab this one, I called that shop and they will lay it away for me for $100.00 so I'd be a fool to let it go. I will post another thread when I have it in my hot little hands, and we will discuss.
