Mesa Boogie speaker ohms questions....wanna add an extension speaker...

Hi all....i want to add an external 1X12 speaker to my mesa, and i'm confused as to what how many ohms the external speaker must be...the back of the amp looks like this

mesa_back.jpg

The original speaker is 8 ohms. It runs from the 8 ohm outlet.

Below that you can see two speaker outlets which read 4 ohms.

What exactly does this mean? That i must use two 4 ohm speakers?

I guess my question is 'can i use two 8 ohm speakers with this amp?' - ie. the original 8 ohm speaker and an 8 ohm external speaker. If so, where do i plug them in? into the two 4 ohm outlets???

And finally.....will this cab sound decent, and push a bit more air when i use it with my mesa??? How much difference will it make?.....i know thats an impossible question to answer...but give me a rough guesstimate.

Its a great amp but it needs to be a bit louder live.
Thanks Very much! :bigok:

Looking at some cab and wiring schemes in my Mesa manual, it looks like if you have two separate (not wired together, like adding a cab) 8 ohm speakers you connect them to the 4 ohm jacks to maintain a consistent load.

Hopefully others will chime in to confirm or correct me.

two 8 ohm cabs will run at 4 ohms, therefore you plug the wire for your internal speaker into one of the 4ohm inputs and the extension into the other.

I strongly recommend that you download the Owner's Manual for your amp from the Mesa Boogie website and review it.

Yes, an extension cabinet can make a big differerence in the sound of your amp. I believe you have a Mesa Studio 22 from the photo--a 112 Open-back Mesa cab, or a 112 Mesa Theile cab will match perfectly to your amp. I have Mesa Mark III and Mark IV combos with 112 EVM speakers, and adding a 112 EVM Theile cabinet is about my favorite rig.

You'll get better dispersion and projection, especially from the ported, closed-back Theile cab.

You'll be "sharing the load" between the two speakers, and lessening their load means better reliability. And you'll have a backup if one speaker goes down.

Putting your combo on top of the ext. cab couples the speakers together, increasing efficiency. You'll notice more bass--especially if you're in the habit of setting your amp on a chair.

Stacking the amp on an ext. cab puts the controls closer to eye level--better ergonomics and easier on your back.

You can use ONE 8 ohm speaker cabinet with a Mesa amp. Simply plug the speaker into the 8 ohm jack. Your combo's speaker should be an 8 ohm speaker; and so it should be plugged into the 8 ohm jack.

You can use ONE FOUR ohm speaker cabinet with a Mesa amp. Simply plug the speaker into ONE of the FOUR ohm jacks. To use an external FOUR ohm speaker, you'll need to unplug your combo's internal speaker.

You can use TWO 8 ohm speaker cabinets with a Mesa amp. Simply plug each speaker into a FOUR ohm jack. This is what I do when I use my Mesa combo with a Theile cab.

NEVER use a speaker load of less than FOUR OHMS with your Mesa amp.

NEVER play your Mesa amp without a speaker plugged into the SPEAKER JACK(S). YOU WILL DAMAGE THE AMPLIFIER!!!!!

You MIGHT be able play your Mesa amp with a mis-matched load under these circumstances: you may play your amp with the combo's single 8 ohm speaker plugged into a FOUR OHM jack. You may play a 16-ohm cabinet (like a Marshall 412) into the 8 ohm jack. However, the amp will sound different, and will not produce full power. See the Owner's Manual, or call Mesa Tech Support for more information.

Never use a shielded (guitar) cable for a speaker cable. Use only 2-conductor cable, such as rubber-covered twisted pair of at least 16-gauge. In a pinch, simple lamp cord (or zip cord--again 16-gauge or larger) may be used. Keep speaker cable runs SHORT to prevent signal loss. Inspect cables frequently for wear and tear. A bad speaker cable can damage your amp.

A Studio .22, DC-2, or F-30 can be a really potent amp, especially when paired with an extension cab, like the 112 Mesa Open-back or the Mesa Theile cab. A matched extension cab adds tremendous value to your amp; in sound, in re-sale, and in reliability. It's a real professional's rig.

Re: Mesa Boogie speaker ohms questions....wanna add an extension speaker...

boogie bill nailed it

unplug the 8 ohm internal speaker and put it into th e4 ohm jack and put an 8 ohm external speaker into the other 4 ohm jack

i recommend playing a bunch of different speakers to see which blends in the way you want it to

a closed back 1 x 12 would be my first ttry .. sit the open back combo on top and enjoy the combination of open and closed back working together

i have (2) 1x12 closed back boogie cabs taht i use with my roadster and kinda wish one was an open back for 'best of both worlds'
