Mesa Nomad 45?

Dirtyking

Would you say that a Mesa Nomad 45 1x12 combo is worth $695. New JJ EL84's and pre-amp tubes, 3 channels, 45 watts.

Boogie Bill? Anyone?

Kinda

I have seen the 55 and 100w models for not much more, and the 100w has an EQ and a lot of options.

I actually think the Nomads will sink a little further in value - they were not one of Mesa's finer pieces of work compared to the Heartbreaker, Lone Star, Trem, Rectoevrb, Dual Rec, and Road King.

i love my nomad 100 a lot. i'd do it. the 45 and the 100 are different beasts though. i'd try it out but i'd say it's worth it

Re: Mesa Nomad 45?

We'll I'm looking for some heavy gain since I don't care for pedals. And I've read the Recto is a desendent of the nomad. So I thought a 3 channel Nomad combo might have more gain variety and options for the price.

Between the Nomad 45 and a F30/50 Combos. Which would have more gain?

Re: Mesa Nomad 45?

I would think the Nomad would have the most gain, but the F-Series amps RIP!

Guitar Player did a test of the Nomads, and the 45 was their fave. They actually thought the amp had TOO much gain. The Nomad didn't score as highly for that reason, but I think it was a bit unfair.

If you are looking a specific amp, I'd say go for it if you like the overall tone. You can get more info about the amp by downloading the Owner's Manual from Mesa's website. As with any amp, good tubes are a MUST.

If you are looking at other options in the Mesa line, you should also look at the Class A Maverick. The Maverick has less gain than many Mesas, but plenty for blues and classic rock. I have one--at certain settings if has a very "plexi"-type tone. I also have a DC-3, and the DC-3 (a two channel forerunner of the Nomad 45) or the DC-5 (2x6L6) are great club amps. These have the Mark IV CLEAN channel and a Rectifier LEAD Channel.

My fave Nomad is the Nomad 100 112 combo, with a 112 extension. Don't have one, but I have used them. I like the headroom and the Graphic EQ, but the 100 watt versions just seem to eat tubes, from what I hear. Lotta power and gain for a small cabinet.

And, while a lot of folks like their Carvin Nomads, that amp just isn't in the same ballpark as the Mesa--it's a totally different animal. If you liked a Peavey Classic 30 or Classic 50 and wanted something a little different, sure.

If you do get the Nomad 45, be sure to read the manual, as there are just so many switching options and tonal versatiliy. And I would strongly recommend that you try to find a matching Mesa 112 EVM Theile cab to go under the Nomad. I brings the knobs up to a readable level--and that small Theile cab will add a tremendous amount of punch and thump to your tone.

Good luck!

Bill

Re: Mesa Nomad 45?

I can't seem to remember how much I bought/sold my Nomad 45 2x12 for. I got it at cost a couple years ago when a local music store was going out of business, then tradeded it in for my 4x12 cab a couple years later.

The amp was pretty nice, but too many knobs. I wanted a crunchier sounds instead of the high gain stuff, so I switched amps. I still have my Subway Rocket for practicing and high gain stuff though.

Totally agree. I have a mint Nomad 100 1-12 combo that I recently took the chassis out of and built a cabinet to house it and some rack gear.
It's now a 3 channel head with rackmount effects below, all controlled by midi (including the amp functions, channel switching, boost, etc). Plop it on any cab and it's one of the best sounding, most versatile rigs I've ever seen. (JJ 6L6 tubes seem to last in these for quite awhile)

While the Nomad 100 is the king in terms of sound. The Nomad 55 and 45 are decent amps. They just take a little longer to get right.

Re: Mesa Nomad 45?

cool amp. I like the footswitch and the gain. not as much gain as a 5150 or a recto. also it is an open back cab so it is not going to sound as heavy. I had a 2x12 open back amp and the sound was not that in your face hard rock sound. more like a blues snarly sound. Closed back cab will get you the heavier sound, and 4x12 cabs are ideal for lots of bass response and chugging.

Re: Mesa Nomad 45?

I know the open back is going to be an issue. I love to chug and rip pitch harmonics. I may need to save a little more cash and get a Tremoverb with the closed back 2x12. But I'm really looking for 50 watts or less. The nomad with a matching 1x12 closed back cab might do the trick.....this all started as wanting a simple practice combo and has turned into a rig overhaul.:smack:

Re: Mesa Nomad 45?

I played 2 outdoor gigs with a 45w Nomad. I was totally ignorant about the settings because it wasn't mine, but that little thing sounded great. It's versatile too. Very decent clean tone, nice crunch and really nice sustaining solos.

That price seems ok since it has new tubes. If you are paying for shipping then I think the price is a little steep.
