Mesa OS 412 for rock/proto-doom?

So I know these cabs are revered for modern metal, but what about more rockish sounds? I ask because theres a pretty good deal for one locally, and while its not quite as good as the $250 Marshall 1960b I just missed out on (damn my timing) its still a good bargain for a Mesa cab.

My current project is along the lines of 70s Pentagram, Graveyard, Witchcraft, and Sabbath with some random doses of Hawkwind, Smashing Pumpkins, Danzig, and Pink Floyd.

At the moment I'd just be using my Orange Tiny Terror head until the band gets things decently established. As gear-obsessed as I am, I've never investigated cabs in any great detail so I'm a bit lost on this one.

So should I jump on it, or wait for a deal on something more vintage-oriented?

Re: Mesa OS 412 for rock/proto-doom?

it has the same specs as the orange oversized cabs really, same speakers. I think graveyard uses those specs on speakers.

still, for pentagram and graveyard and sabbath and stuff they prolly use v30s live, but ya there are other speakers/cabs that might be better suited

Not looking for perfection at the moment, just bang-for-buck without delving into "budget" product lines. As far as local offerings go, its mostly Mesa OS (V30s) or Marshall 1960 (T75s).

Re: Mesa OS 412 for rock/proto-doom?

I think they will work just fine.
I use an Orange 2X12 with V30's and it gets GREAT Stoner sounds with my Thunderverb 50 !
Saying that my other 2X12 (V30 + Swamp Thang) sounds even 'beter' to me !

But those Mesa cabs will deliver !!!

I do the same Orange 2X12 with V30's and it is fine. depends on the amp, but Oranges are made for that configuration.

Re: Mesa OS 412 for rock/proto-doom?

just throwing it out there if money were no object, matamp has the best designed 212 angled convertible cab that makes a great stack:

Re: Mesa OS 412 for rock/proto-doom?

It's well documented by now that the the speakers in the Mesa cabs aren't the same, just FYI everdrone.
They Mesa proprietary V30 is a smoother and slightly darker version of the 'normal' V30.
Anyway.

Both the 1960 and OS will be suitable for that kind of music. Build quality on the Mesa cabs is a bit better generally.
I wouldn't pair the 1960 with T75s with a particularly bright amp though. For e.g, you probably wouldn't want to use the 1960 with T75s with an amp like a XXX, but a 5150/6505 would be okay, but the Mesa OS would be fine with a XXX.
Through something like a 5150/5150II or a similarly mid rangey and slightly darker sounding amp the 1960A/1960B cabs really shine.
With those amps you can easily just dial in more than enough mids to compensate for the slightly scooped nature of the T75 speakers and cut through the mix.

How well the 1960A/B cabs work with a Tiny Terror, I can't tell you though since I don't really know the sound that amp well.
