Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

Just wondering what other Mesa owners are using for speakers and what you're getting out of them with your amp.

Me, I'd like to improve the tightness of the bass of my recto. Right now I use two eminence 'the governer' speakers in a 4X12 w/two dummy speakers to keep it a closed back cab. I was thinking about putting two more speakers in the 4x12 that would have some really defined, sharp, cutting bass, without thin highs.

Your turn:)

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

Dual Recto
v30's. Its the only way man.

Tight as all hell and good response on all frequencies.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I have a dual recto 2 channel voodoo modded with 1 Mesa 4x12 and 2 Voodoo 4x12 cabs. I play heavy to clean to blues to industrial etc. Cabs are as follows.

Mesa 4x12 (top)Hellatone 60 and governor (bottom) anniversary g12h30 & manowar.

Voodoo closed back 4x12 (top) v30 & governor (bottom) texas heat & g12t75

Voodoo rear loaded 4x12 (top) v30 & greenback 25 (bottom) texas heat & heritage g12h30

If you want metal tones mix 2 texas heats or combinations of either texas/g12t75 or manowar. The heritage g12h30 actually has the most bass and punch but run almost $180 per speaker so?

If you want classic rock or alternative try the g12h30 anniversary or 2 wizards on the bottom of the cab. Definateley run the governors up top with bass heavy or bass oriented speakers on the bottom.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I wasn't happy with the bottom end until I changed to JJ tubes. It made a huge improvement in bottom end.

Im running 90w black shadows into Mesa 3/4 back 112 cabs.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I have V-30's in my 2x12. Nice and tight overall, punchy in the mids; though you do need to stand a good little ways away from your cab for them not to kill your ears.

I'd like to eventually add a 4x12 to my rig to compliment my 2x12; with either all Greenbacks, 2 Greenbacks and something else, or 3 Greenbacks and 1 V-30 for symmetry's sake. Just for more mids! Not that there aren't a lot of mids already! :13:

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I am quite partial to my Avatar open back 2X12 with a G12H30 on the left and a VIN30 on the right. Otherwise I'd use my Mesa 3/4 back 2X12's loaded with Black Shadow 90's (which are Classic Lead 80's with vented polepieces). The Mesa rig that these sound best with is my TriAxis/2:90 rack. For my Mark IV head, I like my Bogner Uberkab 4X12 that coincidentally also has G12H30's and Vintage 30's but, in a different config: G12H30's on top with an oval back opening (similar to the Avatar) and the VIN30's on the bottom sealed. Similar to a Road King 4X12 cab setup but, vertical instead of horizontally placed.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I mostly used V30s and the 90w black shadow with my Heartbreaker
With my Mark 2B it was the 90w

I never cared much for the EV unless you crank it, and if you crank it you will cause earthquakes.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

Great replies guys! Sounds like I need something along the lines of the 90w Mesa, Wizards or G12H30s because the Governors I have right now are supposed to be similar to the V30s. I was thinking of going with a Swamp Thang or even a Texas heat or Red Ryder (eminece speaker similar to the Lead 80), But now I don't know. Anyone ever heard a Swamp Thang through a Mesa?

I was thinking about going with an American voiced speaker for the other two spots in my cab, any opinions?

I have heard V30s and C90s mix really well

I have mixed my cabs in that combo and it sounded really nice. I might prefer the G12H30s for a more classic tone.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I just purchased 2 Hellatone V30 speakers for my Marshall cab, use an "X" pattern w/gt75's. Needed to get more midrange out of the cab. Perfect solution.

Cheers Primo.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

Single Recto and V30's. Tried it with V12's (Eminence), C90's, and the C90's and V30's mixed. V30's > All.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

dual rectifier through the marshall 1960 with the G12T-75's.

i find this cabinet to be a good match with this head...gives a nice chunk and a full response without sounding too bright/ice-picky. i think the V30's sound decent, but they accentuate the highs a little too much for my tastes. however, i have heard plenty of players get awesome tone out of a mesa w/V30's.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

One thing I should say is that I hate V30's in Mesa cabinets... I really dislike Mesa cabinets period. They're dark and shrill at the same time, and not as defined or tight as a Marshall styled cabinet.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

MkIII through a EV EVM12L loaded 1x12 and V30 loaded 4x12 (oversized Recto).

I really like V30s, but you have to stand atleast 20ft (preferably further) away from the cab to get a true feel for it's sound....otherwise it sounds really harsh and somewhat boomy.

The governor is only like the v30 in that it is a midrange type speaker. I feel it it a higher midrange and has less lows than a v30 and the resonant frequency of the governor is at 100hz while the v30 is at 75 or 85? The v30 is darker.

I had a couple of swamp thangs and while I really liked them with my mesa stuff it had a resonant frequency of 97hz and I felt it was a speaker that was voiced more for fender amps and had alot of bass and the least breakup besides the tonker I tried but not as thumpin as a texas that has a frequency of 79hz. The texas is very dark but you feel it and it sounds great for chugs.

I had a red ryder and felt the classic lead was more punchy but the red ryder is a very neutral speaker and is good at being neutral. Best for a modelling amp as you get exactly what you put into it. The breakup is good but I like a real distinct voice from my speakers.

+1 I love my Marshall cab with my Mesa... I've heard the G12-75s pushed by a lot of different amps and I've always been impressed.

Very insightful. I'm thinking of going with either the Swamp Thang, Texas Heat or the Wizard now. I want to go with eminence because it's quite a bit cheaper, expecially from avatar.

Do or Would the American line of Eminence speakers mix with the British line of speakers very well? Say I take the two governors and run them with two American-voiced speakers, will there be any crazy frequency issues?

Thanks again!

Thats a very good point to make man. I agree, I realized that more and more daily as I worked with the EQ on my amp to shape my tone. But I definately love all the tones I get out of my boogie. As far as the speakers, I'm not that familiar but the v30's certainly hit the spot for me. Seems they can tackle mostly anything.

Re: Mesa Owners, what speakers do you use?

I think if you put the american voiced speakers on the bottom of the cab you will be ok. That is what I do anyhow.
