this guy asked me if i would buy a mesa v-twin preamp pedal for $250. is that a good deal? supposively in real good shape.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

I hear they're great.

I have a Mesa Bottle Rocket & love it....after swapping out the stock Mesa tubes:bigthumb:

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

It's more like adding extra channels to your amp than it is a front-end pushing OD.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

Check with Zerberus...I know he has or used to have one.

The Bottle Rocket is more of a straight ahead OD or distortion pedal where the original amp tone is still there (atleast the way I use it).

I've never played the V-Twin, but I think it adds a little more color & like someone else said, kind of adds another channel to the amp.

Not sure if $250.00 is any deal, but it's probably a pedal worth trying.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

sounds like a deal to me. They go for big money over here in the uk. Great pedals. As stated, its another channel on your amp, plus a solo boost i believe.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

I would offer him 200-225. see if he takes it. I have one and really like it. It is great for single channel tube amps. On the left channel there is a button that can be pushed to get "clean" or "blues". the blues side is kinda like a ts-9. the other side can get anywhere from light to very searing distortion. I like using the v-twin with jcm 800s or twin reverb style amps. 250 is about the going price for a used v-twin, but I would always offer less and see if the person bites.

thanks.

do u guys think i should get it though? for classic rock-type stuff?

I actually tried one of these out in a music shop earlier today. What you're essentially getting with a V-Twin is two of the preamp channels from a Dual Recto, and that is a Good Thing.

I agree with the comment about swapping out the stock tubes though - there was something about it that wasn't quite it - the sound was 99% there. Anyways, I dunno what they go for new in the states, but they go for $500 CDN new up here (about $440 US, I think), so I'd pay $250US for one in a heartbeat. In fact, if you don't want it... :>

Dual Recto? Sounds 10x more Mark-ish to me, and most other people I've talked to about it.

You're probably right - the only Mesa I've played at any length is a DR, and the pedal I tried out today sounded very like the hot chan. But there's probably subtleties there that I'm missing. Anyways, the point is the pedal sounds awesome.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

It's definately in the Mark series tonewise, and quite frankly, it's not an OD pedal. It's really a preamp with gorgeous cleans, good crunch, and huge amounts of tight, focused gain.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

The Vtwin has a tone all its one.

I used one a lot, even recorded with it. great, thick, saturated tone.

Sub in some low power tubes, you will see a tonal difference.
The clean is amazing as well. I do hate the volume jump from blues to solo.

Offer 200!

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

I hate to rub this in but, my brother gave me alot of his gear when he decided to become a Park Ranger. I got all his Boss pedals ,that I sold or gave away, a Carvin half stack which I also sold, and his Mesa V Twin. That bad mofo saved my ass at a gig when my amp just took a crap on me. I plugged it straight into the PA for the last 3 songs. It sounded thin but worked and nobody threw any beer bottles at me.

BTW, what pre tubes would you replace the originals with?

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

he hasnt emailed me back yet.

if this doesnt work out, eventhough im siked that it will, ill probably end up grabbing a Vox cooltron pedal.

oh my god this is driving me crazy. eventhough im not a metalhead anymore i just cant wait do crank out those haunting heavy jerry cantrell licks with a V-twin.

On the Bottle Rocket, for more of a distortion type use, I threw in a 12AX7C in the V1 slot....

For a smoother OD (which I use if for), I put in 2 JJ ECC803s.

Just not as nasty gritty as the Mesa tubes.

I've also tried a 12AT7, 12AU7, & 12AY7 in there & each added a pretty noticeable character to it.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

Great pedal. I used one for years. tell him you'll give $200 for it - that would be a really good deal.

Re: mesa v-twin pedal.

and if it doesnt work out, wait to give the new duncan sfx-03 a spin ... might be even more to your liking

good luck
