Metal Amps with DI

As of recently, my blackstar's recording usb port broke and I really don't want to, and probably can't, delve into the world of mics. And since I bought it second hand, it doesn't have the warranty. As such, I've been looking into Hughes and Kettner's new tubemeister deluxe line since I lost my only method of recording my guitar. Part of me wants to upgrade to the H&K, but I can't try it locally and most demos of it don't show off its heavier tones.

What I want to know (with or without pedals):
1. How metal can it be?
2. Can it pull of CoB tones?
3. Would it be worth the upgrade instead of buying another Blackstar?
4. Are there amps with DI that can do it better without costing more than the H&K?

Thanks.

Re: Metal Amps with DI

So all that is broken is the usb port?

So you want to go spend $1000 instead of <$300 on a small interface and a 57?

I would get yourself a cheap interface if you dont already have it. Then either go buy a 57 and learn to mic and amp or DI through the interface and use software amps.

Re: Metal Amps with DI

As a studio guy I always ended up using mic + cab where I could use anything. Just saying. There are some workable DI tones but in general it's not the sound that you can hear in your head.

As for a mic'less DI recording, you can get pretty awesome results with modelers like Sansamp FlyRig, AMT Legendary preamps, Line6 HD, Kemper, AxeFX... Ony your spare money decides. If you don't like the idea of going digital, definitely check AMT preamps, they are all analogue.

Re: Metal Amps with DI

Yeah, I probably should just get a DI box, huh? Well, I'd still be missing out on the Blackstar software, which I need just to have a mid control as well as accessing all my patches, not too big a deal, but a significant one nonetheless. Admittedly, this was also a post to see if I'd want an H&K later down the line as an actual upgrade and transition into real tube amps.

Re: Metal Amps with DI

I've had my faithful Red Box for ~20 years!!

A good mic is still the ultimate, but the Red Box is very impressive and I use it all the time for demos.

Re: Metal Amps with DI

Radial JDX seems to be the other name people mention besides H&K Redbox for a good DI box that lets you use any head/cab combination.

Peavey 6505 MH has a USB out.

Also, if your tuner has a bypass out, that can deliver a clean signal to your audio interface, which you can then process later (re-amp, apply amp/cab sim, etc.).

Laney ironheart studio. 3channel 1/15watt all valve with di all the gain you could ever want on tap and a great clean an effects loop a load box in it obviously but yes... Mean piece of gear

Re: Metal Amps with DI

I have a Tubemiester 18, it's ok, haven't tried the new deluxe yet. For metal though id recommend the peavey 6505 mini

Re: Metal Amps with DI

You better buy the Grandmeister, not the Tubemeister. The GM is more suited for metal tones, the TM for rock tones.
