Metal Flake T-Bird Project

Wattage

High Voltologist
Just got my bud's Epi T-Bird today and I'm going to tear it down and do a really cool metal flake paint job on it. I am using Lil Roth Rattlebombs, I have high hopes for them.

I'll keep this updated with pics as I go. Paint is a few days away still but I'll start some of the prep tonight.

Best part is the name of the paint, Warm Beer Flake, it could be a sig color for it's owner.

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

Show was great, we always have a blast up by you. How was the Lake?

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

sanded today since the paint will be here in a few days. figured out a good trick to pull the ferrules out for the bridge posts. I was heating them up and they wouldn't come out so I put one of the posts in and used a hammer like I was pulling a nail, they came right out. filled some of the small dings with some fast glue and sanded them smooth, worked pretty well. very excited to get the paint going.

I was mostly concerned about taking down the clear coat

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

I can't wait to see it finished. That's the best color of metal flake in my opinion.

Can you fine sand metal flake? Are you clear coating it? How does that work?

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

it is 3 coats

Base
Flake
Clear/Kandie

So psyched to get this going

You can't sand the metal flake - they are aluminium with colour on them ,(don't ask how I know- touchy subject :) ),you have to bury them in more clear before any sanding and polishing

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

paint hit, hope to get some on tomorrow

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

Will you paint any primer/filler with color?

no just the basecoat. this guitar is the guinea pig so we'll see how it does. might not be a bad idea to use an auto primer/filler first but between trying to keep the finish from being too thick and being lazy I am hoping this works. so far it looks deadly, the pics don't do much, need to get a real camera

going to try and figure how to top some knobs with these beer caps, the old school Lip Service button is going to fill the input jack hole since we're putting in a trad firebird input jack (might use a Harley seat plug if it doesn't look right)

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

That's really tasty. A few coats of clear, and that will be deep enough to swim in.

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

hoping so anyway.

not using the kandie topcoat, it makes the color a little too green-ish, just going with a clear

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

How did the flakes come out so uniform from a rattle can? I'm intrigued.

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

pretty high quality stuff in these cans

doesn't go quite a far as I would have hoped, I was squeaking out every last drop

you still have to know how to spray but they're relatively easy to use

Re: Metal Flake T-Bird Project

Clearing like crazy since I have to have it set up for use Thursday. Not perfect but crazy cool, learned quite a bit.

Cleared, flaked, cleared, flaked, cleared the truss cover that was really rough looking. Pics can't show it but it is deeeeeep
