Metallica sounding?

Hey.

My Les Paul from Epiphone is soon to beloaded with EMG 60/81, therefor i have 1000DKR that I can use for a OD/Dist pedal.

I'm looking for a somewhat metallica sound as my own JCM900 4501 cannot deliver enough gain.

Its either JCM900OD -> Boost

Or JCM900 clean -> Dist.

I have been looking at:
Boss DS-1/DS-2.
Boss SD-1/OD-3/OS-2.
Carl Martin Crush Zone/Hydra Boost/Heavy Drive.
DOD YJM308.
MXR Zakk Wylde dist.
Big Muff USA/USSR and Metal Muff.
Ibanez TS-9 reissue/ Used TS-10.
Line 6 über metal.

Basically which one will suit what the best?

Its the sound of Kill 'Em All -> Reload I am looking for.

Mostly the early ones.

Hope you can help me.

Thanks.

Re: Metallica sounding?

Velkommen :)

Forresten, hvis du er interesseret i Carl Martin pedalerne har vi en dansker her på forummet som rent faktisk arbejder ved dem, hans brugernavn er "Rid". Du kunne spørge ham om dem.

Re: Metallica sounding?

Well, good question would be, are you going for Jame's rythm tone, or Kirks' rythm or lead tone ? I think STRUTDEXERS Moded TS9 reissue would will give you Kirk's lead tone. But I don't think that you will be able to nail the sound if JCM900. JSm800, and something tells me that Kirk used MP-1 ADA stuff too. So ...

Re: Metallica sounding?

Basically i play lead guitar, but it really is james sound i want.

Re: Metallica sounding?

This pedal has to be good for Twisted Sister and such also.

Tats why the TS-9 looks good, but whaty about the Metal muff and Heavy Drive?

Re: Metallica sounding?

Out of the ones you listed, the Uber Metal.

Out of the ones you didn't list, the Boss Metal Zone.

Re: Metallica sounding?

Get a good OD pedal (TS9) and a graphic EQ pedal. You should be able to do anything with those. When I had my JCM900 that's all I had infront of it. I could cover anything from Ratt to Godsmack with this setup.

Re: Metallica sounding?

Nice, that might just be it then.

About the MT-2, I have it, worse crap pedal doesent exist.

True....but that's what happens when you try to get a $2000+ tube head's tone out of an $80 pedal.

Dude, you really aren't going to get a Metallica tone without a Mark IIC+ and a killer studio, let alone Hetfields right hand and ears.

That said, a good high gain tone could be pushed out of your amp with something like a Maxon OD808.

Re: Metallica sounding?

IT isnt to copy the tallica sound, but to get something reminiscent of it, and i think i'll go with the TS-9.

Re: Metallica sounding?

Re: Metallica sounding?

The TS-9 in front of your amp will get you in the ballpark easily. On the lead channel, have the gain up full and then slam it with the TS-9. Metallica didn't start using Boogies until MOP I believe. The first 2 records are Marshalls. IMO, those first 2 records have a nice raw tone, especially Ride The Lightening.

Just get rid of the metal zone..bleehhhhh!!!! Nastiness in a pedal...LOL.

Re: Metallica sounding?

Good luck...

KEA and RTL= Marshall

MOP/AJFA= MKIIc MESA.

Two totally different animals. A 900's own gain, regardless of pedal, ain't gonna get ya in the ballpark of either. Might give you a good "metal" tone, but will be ard to cop those sounds. 900s are voiced quite differently from 2203/4s..and 100 times moreso going to the MESA.

Yes they will. A Tube Screamer or Super Overdrive pushing the front end of an already gain-dimed 900 (his model - 4501) will get in the ballpark gainwise, which is what I mean, more to the first 2 albums. The tone will be different but the gain level will be there, especially when using EMG's. I've done it with passive pickups through those amps. Now the JCM900 MkIII and SL-X can hit it easily because they both have more gain built in than the Dual Reverbs. They'll even get close to the MOP and later tones due to their higher gain.

Re: Metallica sounding?

I meant tone-wise, Erik..i.e. the voicing of a 900's gain ain't gonna cut it to cop those tones...goosed or not.

sorry for the confusion :)

This is just some info in case you already have an MT-2. Send it off to Keeley Electronics. He does a killer mod to that crappy thing. It works really well on the clean channel of my Fender HR Deluxe. I had to use this because the dirty channel is crap on that amp, not even close to a JCM900. A good OD is all you should need.

Re: Metallica sounding?

HOHOHO i just found a nasty ****er out of the closet...

My good old DOD FX86B Death Metal Distortion.

How will that do?

Dont have any batteries unfortunately...

Or how about a Marshall Jackhammer?
