Mexican Stratocaster neck pocket....painted??

I'm about to make the 30 minute trip on friday to check out a 2001 Fender MIM Standard Stratocaster body that some dude has for sale.

Question is, has anyone EVER seen a MIM strat that had this much finish in the pocket?.

Well, it depends. I can't really tell from the picture how much finish is actually in the neck pocket... It could be just a bit of black laquer but an overall small amount of finish... I would really have to see it in person.

MIM don't use lacquer, just poly. The few MIM bods I have seen have some overspray, never saw that much...maybe a repaint?

Could very well be a refinish. I'm bringing the rest of the parts to see how they line up while I'm there. That and the little pseudo-weight relief holes below the neck pickup should give it up.

no I've never seen that much paint in the pocket, the neck pocket in my MIM strat has almost zero to none.

Yeah, all the MIM, MIJ, MIA, and even Squiers have little to no paint in the pocket.
As a matter of fact, an SX strat that I had ($99 dollar guitar) had a naked pocket.

in general they use a coloured marker of some sort to shade in the edges of the neck pocket so you can't see the bare wood that much... maybe someone went a little crazy with the colour in the neck pocket.. may not be finnish, just marker..

I've seen some mid 90's MIM's that were like that. It's nothing 2 minutes with a Dremel and a steady hhand can't solve.

Oh dude, I'm not worried about the effect it could have on tone or whatever. I'm more worried about the effect on his well being if I show up there and it turns out to be a fake.
