MI Audio couple.

Hey guys,
I'm *this* close to pulling the trigger on a new Blues Pro and Crunch Box (by MI Audio of course). I've already got a crowther audio hotcake and a fulldrive 2 mosfet. Just wondering how much overlap there'll be in terms of type of OD. I've emailed the guys at MI Audio and yes the Blues Pro has got that TS-style drive to it, with a lil bit less mid hump. That said, it sounds similiar to the description of my FD2. Should i go with it, will it be really similiar to my FD2?

Re: MI Audio couple.

The best thing is to be able to try them out side by side, but I understand that's not always possible. What I can tell you for sure is that the Blues Pro and Crunch Box are made to go with each other, and the two together open up a broad range of gain options. The Blues Pro is more open than a TS, and with a broader gain range. It also has the fuzz switch, which kicks in at higher gain settings. If you want to hear an example of the Crunch Box in action, I've just posted a clip called "Funk'n'Roll" which is the Crunch Box into a Fender Super Champ. If you like I will make a clip for you of the Blues Pro in action.

No, I've never been a fan of Mike Fuller's stuff, although I know a lot of people like them. My suggestion would be to take your Fulldrive into a music store that has MI Audio pedals and try them out together, that's really the only way you would know for sure.

Re: MI Audio couple.

Can't tell you about the overlap, but they are great pedals. Good thing is you can always flip them very easily if they aren't for you and you wont' lose much $$. Give them a try, I think you'll like 'em.

Re: MI Audio couple.

Can't speak of the Blues Pro, but you may want to consider a Blue Boy Deluxe. Highly tweakable pedal that should enable you to find your sound. It also pairs well with a Crunchbox. MI makes some great stuff for reasonable prices. Good luck!

Nice tone and playing WAHWAH.

Re: MI Audio couple.

I know the BBD is a good pedal, but MI Audio made the BP to compliment the CB. I think they are shaped in the same manner, one for low to med gain and one for extreme gain. That said, i like the simplicity of the BP, just 3 knobs. I had a neo fuzz and it was alright, but i hated how it had 6 knobs and a 3 way switch.. to confusing.

Would you be able to? just a quick one so i can see what it sounds like. What other drive pedals you got that you can quicjkly AB it to?

Wheres Funk'n'Roll?

Re: MI Audio couple.

I'll record something with the Blues Pro tomorrow, and I'll post a link to it here. I'll also include some Ulbrick 12AXE and MI Audio Blue Boy (I've got the first edition one before the Deluxe) You've heard the Crunch Box on "Funk'n'Roll" (it's actually posted in the Tips and Clips section of this forum) but I'll record something with both the Blues Pro and Crunch Box together.

Re: MI Audio couple.

... That was huge!
I think i don't need new pedals, i need new skills!
Amazing recording there, I loved em all. I was extremely impressed by your initial tone with just guitar and amp. The Super Champ is that smallish fender amp yes? I've got a Blues Junior coming in, how dya think that'll fare with a Super Champ? In terms of TYPE of sound, I'm totally digging your basic tone, and i think that totally influences the sound of your pedals through it. Thanks again, that was GREAT.

Re: MI Audio couple.

Yeah, the straight amp tone obviously has a huge influence on how pedals will sound with it. Having a good basic tone is essential, because they're stomp boxes, not magic wands. The Super Champ is a single 10" 18w combo, designed by Paul Rivera during the three years he worked for Fender. One of the last of the point to point hand wired Fenders and one of the best little amps they ever made. Rivera's goal was to design a smaller version of the black face Deluxe Reverb, and I think he nailed it. You couldn't expect a current production Blues Junior to have the same tone, but at least you will be in the Fender ballpark. For starters the Super Champ is based on 6V6 power tubes, as opposed to the BJ's EL84's. The first thing I would do to a new Fender is to put an old 1950's blackplate RCA 12AX7 in it. The difference between these and ANY current production tubes is substantial. Anyone who tries to tell you different hasn't heard an RCA blackplate, or doesn't really know what they're talking about!

The BJ should be a good foundation amp for pedals, so then it's a matter of finding the pedals that best suit the amp. I've heard the MI Audio pedals through a variety of amps, and they are amazingly versatile. Dave Ulbrick's 12AXE is superior tonally, but he doesn't build high gain stuff, and it's difficult to get him to build now that he has become a full time amp manufacturer. As for the skills, well, I've been doing this professionally for a long time, so I should either be ok at it by now or give up! There's no reason why you shouldn't have the best sounding rig you can have to inspire the improvement of your skills by just making you want to play all day! Good luck with it mate, let me know how it goes.

Re: MI Audio couple.

Yep! Pity i'm all the way in Perth. I'd love to come watch one of your gigs someday. Maybe i'll plan a trip to sydney and melbourne sometime. BTW thanks again, you've been a great help!

Re: MI Audio couple.

Would you believe I've been to Perth 5 times this year already with Daryl Braithwaite? We're headed over your way in July, but up north, to Broome, Derby, Port Headland and Karratha. We've got a good agent in Perth, so we're bound to be back there soon. I'll let you know, come and hang out at a gig, meet Daryl the Aussie icon and we'll talk pedals!

You're welcome for the help mate, it's good to be able to pass on some knowledge, that and experience is how we all learn. Is Kosmic still there in Perth? If they are, they'll have the MI stuff, wont' they?

Cheers...............Geoff.

Re: MI Audio couple.

Cool clips wahwah. I hope to get a Crunch Box, Blue Boy, and Tube Zone eventually, when I actually have some money.

Thanks HJ. I know Brett Garsed loves his Tube Zone, perfect for the amazing stuff he does. Money...yeah, that stuff. I think all Aussie guitarists should be given MI Audio pedals as a matter of national pride...but I don't think Michael Ibrahim would agree! Actually, he deserves all the success he's having, he is making modern classics in our own back yard.
