i saw the MI Audio Crunch box at a guitar store but never got to try it. i've read a couple of reviews and seen a few videos and i think it's good. anyone tried it or owns it? can you give some reviews of it?

Re: MI Audio Crunch Box

With the gain low it has a plexi-vibe to it..at higher gain, it goes into hotrodded 800 territory. It is a simple to use, inexpensive and gets a real good Marshall-esque tone.

Re: MI Audio Crunch Box

Tried one. It was ok. I thought it was kind of muddy. They are good for the price. EMMA ReezaFRATzitz is a notch above in my opinion. It's also a Marshally sounding pedal but has a bias knob that gives it a whole different character. It also has a lot of gain on tap.

Re: MI Audio Crunch Box

Tried one and almost really liked it. Too harsh in the presence band, couldn't be dialed out ever with the internal trim pot (just got muddy then) good saturated distortion, though. I respectfully disagree about the lower gains sounding Plexi. Maybe it was my rig, but to me the lower gains sounded like crap (fake and thin). eBay'd it shortly after testing....

Re: MI Audio Crunch Box

Surely it depends on the amp it's going through? Mine through Hellcat set to clean sounds awesome, warm, fat and although very transparent, also articualte and detailed..... I love mine! My amps sound great with the built in drive, but the Crunchbox offers a different flavour of a great sound. For the money I can't see how you can go wrong?

Re: MI Audio Crunch Box

I love my crunchbox. Comparing it to every other distortion pedal I 've ever tried (a lot) it is the one I've found to work best for my tastes. And it also gets along better with my Morley Bad Horsie wah better than any other distortion pedal I've fussed with as well.

But Yngwiestein's recent posts in this section of the SD forum have successfully ignited my curiosity about the Emma ReesaFratzitz pedal now... and I also see they're coming out with a higher gain model called a Pysdawot distortion (however it's spelled)... whatever that means. I wonder how it will compare.

But, like what someone else mentioned on the topic, the MI Crunchbox is true bypass and the Emma Pedals are not... if that matters.

Loved it when I had one. Now I built myself a tribute and I still love it. Paired with a Blues Pro it's absolutely crushing, you can get any levels of gain with these two pedals. Brilliant combo, very quiet too.

Re: MI Audio Crunch Box

I just got one earlier this week. I've used it sparingly at two gigs and my initial impression is pretty favorable. i've been using a tube screamer and the overdrive channel on my Laney vc30 for the last few years and the Crunchbox is a very different tone compared to those. It makes single note riffs sound quite heavy. I'm not into really high gain stuff but like the Plexi-esque tones between 9 and 10 o'clock on the gain knob.
Sounds great for dark, neck pickup soloing.

I like mine a lot. As BB said, it can do a cool OD with the gain low ,9 oclock. Its not your typical low gain OD but a very usable one none the less. And with the neck pup its very thick. I love for my high gain stuff. Very smooth and can cut like a knife. I do prefer it with a clean amp but with the right settings can make a dirty amp a molten monster.

I've had mine for about a month and am very pleased. Like KJ, I am running the gain fairly low ..... between 9 and 10, and it is still possible to dial in lead tones with rich harmonics even at low volumes. This pedal is amazingly quiet.
