Microphone preference

Re: Microphone preference

I have preferences over both of those mics put together. Given the choice, I prefer the 57. To my ears, it's full, focused, versatile and quite well balanced. The i5 isn't a bad mic by any stretch but miking a guitar cab with it is always left wanting.

Re: Microphone preference

+1 I've used both, but generally prefer a 57 since it's the more balanced of the two. The i5 can sound pretty big if you take advantage of proximity, but the highs are kind of grainy and it can be a bit mid-scooped. It works OK for metal, but in general I'd rather use something else.

Re: Microphone preference

57, although I have used a 57 countless times whereas an i5 only a few. I think it may be more of familiarity in my case.

Smack a 421 with either of those and you got a great combination!

Re: Microphone preference

No experience with the i5 from which to draw any comparison.

For better or worse, the SM57 is a reference. Placement is important.

+1 for combining brands and types.

Re: Microphone preference

57 because all I have ever used is a 57. I did pick up a couple CAD TSM411s during SDOTD and they sound just as good as my 57s.

Re: Microphone preference

I have both and have used both in similar situations.

The 57 sounds more familiar. It's kind of a industry standard. The I5 sounds good as well.

You'd really have to try both to find out which you like more.
