Mics, do they deteriorate in quality with age?

Am eyeing off a used sm58 on ebay. Will it sound the same as a new one (providing everything is fully functional of course)

If not, will it sound dramatically worse?

Thanks.

Re: Mics, do they deteriorate in quality with age?

It'll sound the same, especially if it's a 58. Those things are tanks! My old, somewhat beatup 58 sounds the same as new ones, and same for my old 57.

Re: Mics, do they deteriorate in quality with age?

It would be the first time I have ever heard of a working SM58 deteriorating. Them thinks are tanks!

would it be redundant if i were to say that those things are tanks????

nah...those things are tanks!

Cheers for the info.

Just out of curiosity, what about condenser mics?

Umm, don't quote me...

But I think you should be fine. They tend to be a bit more sensitive to physical shocks...bumps, etc. But I've not heard of aging issues...

Aren't those old RCA ribbon mics the bees knees?
