Middle Pickup Suggestions Needed...

Hi all~~ I just finished a Strat pickguard with P90's (10k) in the neck & bridge, & a Dimarzio SDS-1 in the middle (only because I had a spare), & I'm not at all happy with the 2 or 4 sounds. The setup is a 5-way switch, 1 Vol, 1 Tone, & a blender knob for mixing the neck & bridge. Simple. But I want i single coil Stratty p/u with a great stand alone tone, but something that would give me quacky or interesting 2 & 4 sounds. Something altogether new! My middle SDS-1 is simply too hot & dark for that slot & doesn't have anything to offer opposite the P90's. I'd live to hear about real great results that many of you may have come across. Thanks in advance & looking forward to hearing about some real world results!

I had a HHH (hot rails in the middle) and never used the middle pickup. I switched it to a SSL-1 to have the classic strat sound and couldn't be happier.

Try running the middle pickup though a capacitor to remove some low end. You can try a .0047 uF to start. If you want more lows go to a larger value like .01 uF.

Thanks Dave, Where would this cap go, & the higher the value, the less the lows are removed?

In series with the pickups hot lead. So between the pickup and the switch.

Yes the larger the value the lower in frequency the cutoff.

But for that quack you need the treble frequencies from the middle pickup. If you want to be able to use the pickup by itself, get a 5 way switch with 5 actual contacts. Wire the cap to go from the middle contact to the 2 and 4 contacts. That way the middle position is left unaffected. You can use two caps if you want to fine tune the low end roll off for each quack position.

Hey Dave... You said "Wire the cap to go from the middle contact to the 2 and 4 contacts"
I understand the premise with leaving the middle position untouched by the cap. But exactly how do i wire one cap to make contact with the 2, 3 & 4 posts?? Thanks
