Might pick up a 1976 Marshall MK2 100w head. NEED ADVICE!

Hey Guys!

Then do a search on the page for "Marshall" - you'll see the ad.

This thing is going for $1250 CND.

Does anyone know anything about this heads? (LOL obviously...)
Is this the same head EVH and EJ were/are using?
Is 1250 a great price for it, if it's in fact all original and good working order?

Over here in Canadian music stores, even a new JCM2000 head will run 1450 plus tax... So I think to own a piece of history like this would be awesome.

What are your suggestions?

Well..basically that's a metal front version of a 1959. AFAIC those are the best years..more gain...a little more ballsy..more "hard rock/metal" than a PLexi.

However you should ask for the letter code designation in front of the serial number...it could be a Super Lead, A Super Bass, a PA head, etc... i.e. it would say SL/AXXXXX or SB/AXXXXX, SP/XXXX, etc

The thing that makes me leery is where it would say 'super lead" or "super bass" looks partially blocked out,...it just says "super...(blank)"

I would do some more investigating..but I looked up the SN# and yes it's a 1976 head.

As for price I have no idea...whats that in US $?

$1250 CD is $1000 USD.

I just called the store and he says the prefix is "SB". So does that mean it's a bass head?

I heard EVH was using a bass head on his first recordings. But I got no knowledge about what it will sound like at all.

That's a Super Bass. Make sure it has a 16-ohm tap for the speakers. The later Canadian Marshall were not equipped with a 16-ohm tap, but '76 might be early enough that it would have one.

BTW - changing a Super Bass to a Super Lead is easy, although some prefer playing guitar through a Super Bass.

Hey Steve. I"m sorry for being a n00b, but what does a 16-ohm tap for the speakers do? Why does the amp have to have it?
Does it have something to do with which cabs I can use with it?

Yup...thats a super bass.

As said, alot of guys played 6 strings through a SB. I've played through one, a late 60's model, many, many years ago, and it had quite a bit more low end, and didn't break up as soon. I def remember liking the amp tho. I suspect like other Marshalls, a mid 70's version will be a little hotter/brighter than an actual plexi

Chris Snider used to have some clips on his webpage of a Paul through a Super BAss, and you could really hear the diff between it and the SL and the 1959X clips...not bad..jes different..unfortunately he took down his amp clips.

If it's in good shape, I'd say that's a good price. You can alwayys mod it if need be, unless you are worried about the value going down.

But if at all possible ya should def run YOUR axe through it.
