Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

'84-'87 Squier E-series Strat (don't know the exact year, but guitars with a serial number starting with an E were made during that period), lefthanded. 3-piece alder body in Olympic White, '60's neck with rosewood board and truss rod adjustment at the heel, all stock. It's the guitar I play the most, the neck is just fabulous. No new MIM/MIA Strat I've had the pleasure to play could mimic that feel (although I off course must admit I have never played an American Vintage series Strat or Custom Shop Strat). Great little guitar, especially for what it cost me (175 Euros, including a gigbag and a leather strap). You can't even get a new Squier Affinity Strat for that price, here.

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

I have a 60's reissue MIJ Strat, and it's a great guitar. Many have said and wrote that MIJ guitars are better constructed than ones right here in the states but I'm sure there are good ones and bad ones just like any line of guitar. Well-built with an alder body and rosewood neck, mine could use a re-fret or at least a dressing but it still plays and sounds sweet. Although I swapped out the pickups for Seymour Duncan's, the stock s.c.'s that the Japanese factory used actually are pretty good sounding. I like my SD's in it better though.
I don't see too many around much these days, which may be a testimony to how well they were made. Mine's a keeper.

About the headstock size: the headstock on my MIJ axe is the same size as my '01 Anerican Strat. I believe the 70's models had the bigger headstock.

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

I've got a MIJ '83 Ibanez Roadstar Strat. It's the identical neck as the Fenders from that era, and it smokes. The body is Alder I believe (haven't checked) and the bridge on it is totally cool. It strings from the top, but near the bridge pickup. The strings go in "backwards" and loop around like a wraparound LP. So all the pressure is forward, and it has two huge studs and anchors. So when blocked, the attack and sustain is that of a wraparound LP. Kind of a wierd combination. But I love the guitar. And on those 80's Japanese strats, it's all about the neck. It's totally vintage, and very well made. It's hard to go wrong with a Japanese Strat IMO, although in the mid 90's when the Yen was really high against the dollar, I saw some Japanese Fenders that seemed a little compromised, and they did succumb to the "some were good, some were bad" accusations. But it wasn't so much the guitars were bad altogether, moreso it was fit and finish issues, and the fret dressing suffered. All stuff you could address afterwards.

Hi there

Call me voode and I'm new here...

I've got a 70s reissue MIJ with maple neck, swapped the bridge pickup with a sd hotrail. Awesome feel and tone:smokin: . The stock pick up ain't that good though. I heard that MIJs are now limited to Japanese market only ..is it true?

cheers:smokin:

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

I have a 62 RI with the (I beleive) foto flame body. I currently have a set of MM/SD Albert Lee sig pickups in it. they are very similar to a APS-2/APS-2/Twangbanger set, but are underwound and sprinkled with fairy dust by the good folks at the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop.

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

I have a 84ish Squier E-series Strat. Classic looks black body, maple neck and white pickguard.

Great little guitar especially as it only cost £100 with a hard case!

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

Most of my Strats are Squire E series Strats from the 80's. They're my faves!

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

MIJ Strats are nice. I've played the 50's and 60's reissues that were out in the 90's and played some Squiers from the 80's, most recently Lew's. They feel comfortable, sound really good, balance well. They're really good guitars. Definitely worth looking in to.

Re: MIJ Strat- any owners here?

I have a 62 reissue. Great guitar.

I never got into the Squires and don't know anything about them. What's an "E" Series?

That's what the serial number begins with. ;)

Does is designate something specific about the guitar? A good year, model etc? A couple people here seemed to think it was worth mention.

That's just the year or years. But what's significant about these is that they were made at a time when Fender had no US facility. There weren't any USA Made guitars within that time frame. Not the entire 3-4 years the "E" series Squires were made, but for couple of them. With that being the case, the quality across the entire line had to be upped to continue selling guitars so that when the new American Standards were introduced, people would buy them.

Here's the dating codes for Japanese Fenders.

That's the ticket: new electronics. The guitars are wonderfully made...they just need DUNCANS to make 'em the equal of any USA made Strat.

I play my MIJ Squires all the time and rarely play my '63 Strat.

If I put some Duncans with a strong bridge pickup in my '63, I'd play it more often.

I like modern Strat pickup sets better than vintage Strat pickup sets.
