Mini Humbucker & P90 Les Paul Setup Question

Hi Everyone! I am considering getting a Les Paul with P90's. Naturally like everyone else on here I like to play around with different setups and ideas. I am thinking about trying out the following setup if I get the guitar.

Bridge - Duncan Antiquity II Mini Humbucker
Neck - Duncan Antiquity P90 "Soapbar"

First question has anyone tried such a setup? If so what did you think? I am looking to create a guitar that can cover a lot of ground (jazz, blues, classic rock and hard rock). What type of volume pots would you use? 250 or 500? Whats everyones expererience with the "mini humbucker"?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Mini Humbucker & P90 Les Paul Setup Question

Try your guitar with the stock P-90s first. They may just be everything that you want. If not, a few magnet swaps may fix them.

If you decide to take them out, I am also a real fan of minis. I haven't had a specific experience with the Duncan minis, but the Gibson Firebird and NY minis are great. From my experience with other Duncan pups, I would assume that you can't get much better than his minis, and I would love to someday try the SM-3 in the bridge of one of my guitars.

Me too.
A lot of people like the P-90 in the neck, but it's too great of a bridge pup to waste that way.

Re: Mini Humbucker & P90 Les Paul Setup Question

The SM-1 mini is pretty boring and not really that different from a regular neck humbucker such as an APH-1.

One problem with that plan is that most mini humbucker rings go on the top of the guitar and hence require screw holes that would be visible when you go back to soapbars. I think that are rings that fit just into the soapbar cavity but there are many fitting problems around soapbars and minis.

Asian soapbars can have smaller dimensions and the routing might not fit a US soapbar with the cover. I had that happen with a PRS SE.

I would use a staple type pickup in the neck, if the routing is deep enough.

But if he decides to stay with a mini in the neck and not go back to the P-90, he won't have any problems with the holes from the mounting ring showing. And if he sticks to American minis and soapbars he won't have a problem with them fitting.

Love Mini's...thinking hard about a mini neck P-90 bridge set up myself in one of my guitars.

Use 500k pots and let it rip.
