im looking to put minihumbuckers in my strat. could you guys tell me about these. all i know is that they have them on firebirds and some les pauls.

so you mean real mini humbuckers, not single coil sized humbuckers.
im a big fan of firebirds and mini hums in general. i really like the seymourized versions. they have a little more output than the vintage and more mids. if you really want to push the amp, the customs bark way harder, especially in the bridge

They are still humbuckers, but with (obviously) smaller coils, and they sound close in tone to P-90s. I think.

I've used minihumbuckers a lot. They have a clean, bell-like tone. More fullness than a single coil, and less bloopy than a neck humbucker. The Antiquity Firebirds I have are really nice. They actually have a pretty strong bass response, and a certain type of high end bite that I like... not icepicky, but still a definite and unique bite. Keep in mind that Seymour offers the 21-day exchange, so you can check into something like a vintage SF1 in the neck, and an SM2 in the bridge, just to see if that works. Switch around if you need to....

I haven't tried any duncans but the two LP deluxes (one a 69 which belongs to my dad the other a 72) I've played with them scream. You just have to get your eq curve right and you are good to go.

I thought about picking up another Strat to load with a pair of SD mini-HBs, but I was concerned about the polepiece spacing of the bridge pickup -- I don't think they have trembucker versions.

I put a Seymourized mini-HB in the neck position of a Tele, and it sounds wonderful. It is full sounding with some real bite and growl. The Fender CS Nocaster bridge pickup has just enough juice to keep up, and the combination of the two is very tasty.

what would happen if i took the cover off?
would it change it for the good kinda like a humbucker?

You don't wanna take the cover off. It's the cover that holds the two coils together, And they look nothing like a full size under there. kinda Butt ugly.

If you were to take the cover off of one, the pickup itself might fall apart. BTW, I wouldn't worry too much about polepiece spacing on the Firebird mini's, if I'm not mistaken, there is at least one rail under that shiny cover.

Re: minihums

Here's what a Mini looks like under the cover. Sounds great!!
Like I said ....Butt ugly. :argh:

Re: minihums

Great idea, YesFan...Chandler had a guitar called the 555 that was kind of a Strat/Rickenbacker hybrid that had mini-hums (I think they were of the Firebird variety). They were nice guitars (as were most Chandlers).

Re: minihums

Firebird minis have little magnets in the coils, kind of like 2 SC's together. LP Deluxe minis have magnets in the bottom, essentially miniaturized HB's.

Evan told me that the SM-1 N & B have the magnets in the coils, as does the SM-2 N. The SM-2 B and both SM-3's have a bar magnet on the bottom.

Re: minihums

had anyone seen the telecaster that steve howe used? it had a regular slanted tele pickup in the bridge and a minihumbucker in the neck. what model telecaster was that?

So, does the Firebird use blades, and the Deluxe mini uses poles?

The original firebird designs may have used magnetic pole pieces. That is what Butch Snyder said.

There is probably more info in the Antiquity or Antiquity II web page that describes products.

Re: minihums

My instructor has a mini-humbucker, I think the Vintage Duncan, in the neck of his Schecter. It sounds really nice for classical type stuff, and overall anything played clean. It has a nice fullness to it, but it's also extremely clear sounding.

Re: minihums

Now you've piqued my curiosity. I might have to try one of these in a cheap Strat. ;)
