Mixing SD and Fender Single Colis

Is there anything I need to know about having a mix of SD and Fender single coils in an SSS Strat? I've just ordered an SSL6 to go in my Classic Players 50's Strat alongside the stock middle & neck. Are they wound in the same direction, or do I need to reverse the ground and hot wires?

Re: Mixing SD and Fender Single Colis

The only proper way to check is to compare the coil wind directions and the magnetic polarity relationships of all three pickups. Leave the SSL-6 conductors long, just in case they need to be reversed.

FWIIW, the Ant Texas Hot, Bridge works perfectly with Fender Tex-Mex single coils. A Twangbanger needs everything reversing in order to "co-operate" with a pair of Ant II Surfers.

EDIT - On some Fender MIM guitars, the bobbins are plastic. It is possible to persuade the individual rod magnets out of the bobbin with no fear of disturbing the coil. If the appearance of the conductor colours in important to you, reverse the polarity of the middle pickup.

I have alwaus had to swich wires when using duncan and fendrrs together. I would wire the duncan backward black hot white ground

Re: Mixing SD and Fender Single Colis

To make a long story short, most Duncan pickups will need the leads flipped in order to work as intended with most Fender pickups. They might be wound the same way (top left/top going), but they usually have opposite magnetic polarity (Duncan south, Fender north, IIRC).

With a little luck, it's going to be re-delivered today, but as I'm not home for another week, I guess I'll find out then.

Re: Mixing SD and Fender Single Colis

I've mixed SD's and Fenders in 3 or 4 guitars. complete gamble! Didn't know the first time, it was reversed. Went in prepared the second time, they were the same...

Re: Mixing SD and Fender Single Colis

Well the SSL6 is in. I went with the black as the hot wire onto the switch, and all seems well that way round. I got pretty much what I wanted, which was a rather beefier bridge pup.

Good to know I am putting a SSL3 in the middle this week in my Strat. Did you get the desired tone?

Re: Mixing SD and Fender Single Colis

Pretty much. I've always found standard Strat bridge pups to be rather thin and lacking punch. This sorts that out nicely, and it still sounds like a Strat.
