Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

Is it possible to take a 4x10 Fender DeVille and mod it to a 1x15?

I'm sure it could be done with a new speaker baffle.

But it would be best to match the new 15" speaker with the impedance of the old speakers.

In old Super Reverbs, the 8 ohm speakers are wired in parallel and four 10" speakers in parallel = 2 ohms.

Is your Deville wired the same way so that the amp wants to see a 2 ohm load?

Might be hard to find a 2 ohm 15" speaker if that is the case.

Just food for thought.

lew is right. a new baffle and match the impedance and you should be good

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

It might be easier and more practical to go with a 1x15 extension cab depending on what you are looking for. I have used mine with my 4x10 Randell and the results of the 10s mixed with the 15 in very nice.

Great suggestion! Never been a fan of 4x10s, but there's a good price on a great amp and I was curious about modding it to a different speak selection.

Thanks for the ideas/suggestions!

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

I thought 2 ohms sounded a bit strange for a guitar amp. That would be rare even for a bass amp.

The 4X10 Fender DeVille's total impedance is 8ohms not 2ohms so as mentioned above you should be able to find many choices for a 15in replacement speaker. Personally I'd also go with a 1x15 extension cabinet instead of replacing the baffle. Of course you could always put the old baffle back in but it's a PIA. The extension will be easier in the long run & a separate 1x15 8ohm cabinet could be used with most other amplifiers since 8ohms is the most common impedance load for modern guitar & bass amp's.

This way you'll leave your 4x10's in place!!! Although you might not be crazy about them but a lot of other people are & actively seek them out. This might help it sell at a later date if you decide to part with it down the road???

Great suggestion! Never been a fan of 4x10s,

Man, I love how my 4x10 Sunn sounds. Punchy as a Mother Phuggar. Though, I do also like my Or15 through my 15" Emi. I would LOVE to play the Orange through both. Hmmmm, May be my project today. Just gotta see if I have to change the wiring in the Sunn. Sorry for the derail, but you got me on a mission. LOL

As Securb said, try to find a cheap 1x15" extension cab. There's always one popping up on CL around here.

Good luck.

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

lew mentioned the super reverb which is indeed a 2 ohm amp, im not surprised the deville is 8 ohms but that makes it easy

Yeah, I was asking if the Deville is wired the same as the four 10 amps I'm most familiar with: the tweed Bassman and the Super Reverb. Both are 2 ohm amps.

So if the Deville uses four 10" 8 ohm speakers for an 8 ohm speaker load, it must be wired like a Marshall cabinet: two pairs of speakers in series for 16 ohms for each pair...and then each pair combined in parallel to get it back to 8 ohms.

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

I think you'd be better off finding a Fender 212 Deville.

IMO, It's a better sounding speaker configuration for that amp, and they're fairly common in the same used price range as the 410.

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

fwiw, a mate did that to a tweed bassman. Serious amp.
Swapping the baffle alone will help that amp.
Still, if the reason you are doing it is simply to get a fatter, meaner, bassier tone, then you could also consider just putting in some different 10s as well. The stock fender/emis are not great. Look around for a set of old eminence "blue frame" alnicos that fender used to use in their early tweed reissues. Great deep warm tone for not much dough. You can get a metric ton of low end with 4 tens. Just ask any bass player.

Re: Mod 4x10 amp to a 1x15

I'd always go with 12's over 15's in a guitar amp. 15's always make it sound like you're plugged into a bass amp.

I have never experience that phenomenon and I have two amps with 15's. I find they are fuller but I do not get the loose low end I get plugging into a bass amp.

FWIW I love the sound of a guitar through a bass amp especially the old 4x10 Fender Bassman amps.

I agree, played in a Jazz group with an ES335 copy through a 15'' speaker bass amp that sounded very full but was never flubby...really mixed well with the group.
