modded JB tone change

I have an alder body/maple neck HH floyd'd superstrat that I currently have a Jazz in the neck and a Screamin Demon in the bridge. I really like the articulation and clarity of the demon but have recently found myself wanting a little more kick from the bridge. I have a JB floating around that I used to have in this guitar but eventually swapped for the Demon because while I liked the wall of crunch and sizzle of the JB it lacked some clarity and sparkle. So I have been reading up on pole piece mods and am now thinking about swapping the JB back into my guitar with either shortened fillister screws or with the hex screws from the demon. I am wondering how the JB with these different pole piece mods would compare to the demon as well as a B&B L500XL. I used to own the L500XL years ago and loved the clarity and attack of this pickup but eventually sold the guitar it was in. Any thoughts on how these JB mods would deliver to tighten up he bass, ease back the mids a little and open up the clarity?

Thanks

Oh yeah and I am playing into a TS boosted blackstar and I play mostly 80s style hard rock. Ratt, Dokken, Van Halen, Whitesnake, Ozzy, Extreme etc. So I like lots of bright crunch and searing harmonics.

Re: modded JB tone change

The JB with hex heads is really bright and sharp sounding. The JB with short fillister screws tightens up the bass and clarifies the treble. Neither mod sound much like the Demon or the 500XL. If you're wanting more guts from the Demon try an A8 magnet or a roughcast unoriented A5.

Re: modded JB tone change

ive done the A8 mod to the demon before and while it did tweak the eq and deliver a tiny bit more push it still didn't do much for me. I do like the output of the JB, but just felt the eq needed some tweaking to tighten things up and open up the attack, clarity, and presence. Since the only other pickups that I know fairly well are the Demon and L500XL I was just wondering how a modded JB in this way would compare to those.

The JB is still largely the same animal no matter what poles you use or magnet change.

I have noticed this, too. It does change the sound, but JBs have an inherent sound that transcends all mods done to it.

Re: modded JB tone change

Gotcha. I do like the overall sound and feel of the JB but just wanted the eq slightly adjusted. But it seems like the consensus is that clipping the screws shorter might get me closer to that direction. Whereas swapping in hex screws is a little too extreme. I only mention the demon and l500xl for comparison sake because those are the other pickups I've played the most and are most familiar with.

Re: modded JB tone change

I've been thinking about trying the half-air mod on one of my JBs. Don't think it'd affect the high end much but it's said to reduce congestion in the mids, trim the low end, and give a more open feel overall. With slightly reduced output, which would suit me well. This might translate to a bit more apparent sparkle too.

A JB is always going to be more compressed-sounding than the Demon, but I'm hoping the mod might bring it more in line with the majority of my other bridge pickups.
