Modded my Crybaby

DrNewcenstein

He Did the Monster Mash
On a whim I grabbed a few resistors and a couple of capacitors and some jumper leads and started poking around inside my Dunlop Wah. I finally woud up soldering a 16K resistor to the two resistors circled in blue here:

Here's what the wah sounds like without the mod:

And here it is with the mod:

Excuse the poor Dazed and Confused hack - I was sitting, and tired.

You can hear how the tippy-top high end is rolled off (around the 16kHz I'd guess  ) and there's no clipping in the Modded clip like there is in the Unmodded. However, there's an overall volume drop of a couple of dB.

There's also another spot where sticking the resistor jacks up the output, overloading a clean channel quickly.
Connect the 33K to either component circled in red with the 16K resistor and get some old dirty farty fuzz

Re: Modded my Crybaby

Nice post. It´s interesting to hear the difference...

...from your description did you wire a 16K in parallel to the 33K above and another in parallel to what I assume is a 0 ohm resister?

Re: Modded my Crybaby

The mod sounds really good, but I have to be a ******(lol) and point out you were playing "Electric Funeral" by Black Sabbath.

Couldn't say if it was series or parallel - I soldered one end of the 16k to one end of the 33k and the other end of the 16k to the end of the other resistor. New resistors have those really long leads coming off them, so the reach is covered.

I'm assuming this connects the 33k to whatever else is connected to that resistor as well.

Yeah, I knew I was doing that one right, but I was apologizing for the harmonics from Dazed And Confused

What model is it?Grab a schematic of it and figure out what you did from that.

EG: for a JH-1

Re: Modded my Crybaby

Ok, finally got pics, and did another mod.

Here's the 16K resistor:

And here's where the capacitor attaches (determine location by the screw hole that mounts the board to the housing).

The resistor cuts the highs a bit so it's not as harsh, and the cap changes it from "wah" to "woh". Get's a nice funky sweep that reminds me of that Lenny Kravitz song with JPJ on bass.

Re: Modded my Crybaby

Man, that dangling cap is making me nervous. You're gonna short something out on that thing if you're not careful. Why did you leave the leads so long?

Re: Modded my Crybaby

Also those long lead lengths might add noise and oscillation to the circuit...Shorten up and neaten what you got..The work looks pretty shotty! ;o)

Re: Modded my Crybaby

Hey really cool! I like the mod!

I was switching back and forth on your sound demo (very cool to do the exact song) and the mod is mellower, less harsh. Good job bro! :fing2:

Re: Modded my Crybaby

The cap was folded down so the leads weren't touching anything they weren't supposed to. Besides, it was a temporary setup just to see what it sounded like using the switch to A/B it directly.

After I took these pics I removed both mods and replaced the .01 cap with a .020 (didn't have a 22).
Thinking about hooking those up to a switch to A/B them because right now I'm not hearing anything wildly different (and this is supposed to be the big difference between a stock GCB95 and a JH?).

Re: Modded my Crybaby

The most important thing is that it sounds good and you had fun doing it.

This time I wired the original cap and the .020 cap to each end of a 3-way on/on/on mini-toggle (removed the other mods), and ran the center common poles of the switch to the spots on the board where the cap would normally go.

The pot has been set so it's fully on when the toe is down.

First part (Electric Funeral) is the .020, 2nd version is the original .001 cap.

Next section (Voodoo Chile) is the .001, 2nd version is the .020 (otherwise known as the Hendrix mod - actually it should be a .022, but whats .002, really?).

Last section is that Lenny Kravitz track I mentioned earlier. Never really tried to learn the song, but I heard it a few times on the radio and those chords sound close enough for this purpose.
First part is the .020, 2nd version is the .001

Oddly, instead of the center position of the switch being both on at once, it's like the wah is fully open, but not as harsh as either one, and the pedal doesn't work.

If the emitter of q1 is already going to the inductor, why did you connecct the wire to both of the solder joints and why put a capacitor there? Not knocking what you did just curious about it.

Re: Modded my Crybaby

Dunno. I don't know what part does what aside from the 33k resistor next to the inductor and the .001 cap. I was just sticking stuff to other stuff and listening to how it changed the sound.
