Modding BW neck

Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys had any ideas to help me tune up my bw neck. I've wanted to play around with magnet and pole piece swapping, and I think I could make this one suit me a litter better. I want it to be quieter and if possible brighter. I was thinking Alnico 3 or 4 with some allen screws instead. Please let me know if i'm wasting my time!

Re: Modding BW neck

Yeah, a parallel switch will do it- and you don't lose the original series sound. Switching out the ceramic magnet for an A5 would probably scoop out the huge mids it has.

I believe that the BW has spacer magnets. What would happen if you left them in while putting an Alnico magnet in the center?

Re: Modding BW neck

I took one of the 3 ceramics out for fun. I also half air'd it for no real reason other than just messing around. I'll throw in a parallel switch soon. I'll let you guys know how it says after I restring it!

Re: Modding BW neck

Results are in: it makes it less boomy, a lot less bassy and a bit less middy. Very "cool" sounding even though it's power is still comparatively high for a neck pickup. I think it worked out for me! Hopefully someone else gets something out of this in the future!

Re: Modding BW neck

Which one of the ceramics did you remove? One of the spacers or the center magnet? And if you removed the center magnet, did you then replace it with an A5 as you had mentioned considering trying? Just trying to clarify.

I removed the ceramic on the slug side (spacer), and half air'd the screw side. I left the other two ceramics in. Sounds pretty interesting now, a little less full which helps with the mahogany guitar it's in.

Re: Modding BW neck

I was wondering because I would like to try adding ceramic spacers to a popular pickup that has an A5 in it. That is if I can find someone to sell me a couple of said spacers.
