Little dilemma here: I want to upgrade my wah. I have a made in the USA Vox (by Dunlop?). Reasonable buffer, but I mainly want a led that would tell me when it's on or off and an external power supply instead of the battery. The tone is more or less what I want although I wouldn't mind tweaking it a little.

I also have an option to buy a used white Fulltone Clyde Standard for a very good price. If I'll buy it and sell the Vox the price difference would by minimal, maybe even cheaper than the Vox upgrading option. However, I have no experience with Fulltone wahs while I've learned to rely on my current pedal which does what I need it to do...

I use the Wah for Hendrix/Clapton leads and for funky rhythm... I'm a classic rock and R&B player and what I want is an open wah tone with good bite - yet not ice picky... the Vox is almost there... AFAIK know the Fulltone is also made for that purpose...

So what do you think? should I upgrade the Vox? or buy the Fulltone?

Re: Modding my Vox vs. Buying a Fulltone Clyde Standard

I would buy the fulltone, I'm sure the vox can sound great with tweaks, or even a drop in kit from someone like wilsoneffects.com, but those fulltones are pretty sweet, and if you don't dig it, you can resell it for little or no loss (maybe even a gain) and then learn what you don't like about it and what you don't and apply that too the vox.

Or, just play and don't worry about it so much, cuz it all gets lost live probably lol.

Re: Modding my Vox vs. Buying a Fulltone Clyde Standard

The Fulltone has a very wide treadle sweep, so it's something to think about - it's significantly different than the Vox. I found the sweet spot to be actually pretty narrow though so there was not much benefit to the extended range.

I use a Wilson 12-pos Vintage Spec Rippah Q Wah and really like the sound, though I'd choose a simpler version next time 'round. It has the DC jack and an LED - I don't really feel like either is necessary, and the other knobs were pretty much set and forget for me once I found the settings I liked.

He builds great pedals at really fair prices - you should at least check them out before going for the Fulltone.

Re: Modding my Vox vs. Buying a Fulltone Clyde Standard

That's why I didn't like the Fulltone. People said it wasn't really that great because it had a wide sweep and I didn't think it made that much of a difference until I played done.

Also, if you are buying a new wah go to Wilson and get the std. wah. Great wahs for the money. Better than most production wahs including the RMCs. :wall:

I bought a wah from a forum bro on here. When I got it the jacks were loose and it was pretty dirty. The soldering looked brittle etc. Just not good. I talked to TGWIF quite a bit and one day he asked for my address so I gave it to him. I forgot about it until about a week later I get this package and there is a wah board inside. It was a John Spina board (Stratdeluxer97) and he said it was a great board. He was actually thinking about buying another Vox wah to put it in but he wanted me to have it after getting mine. I got in contact with John and asked if he would clean it up for me etc. because it would cut out, squeal, and get this really loud static to the point that it wasn't even useable anymore. He cleaned it all up and I got it back. It sounds great. I've played Fulltones and other wahs and I have yet to find one that compares to this one under $300. If i were you I would go to John before anybody else. He could probably help you out.

Problem now with modding your wah,is that the inductor and pot alone, are going to be pretty expensive...I'd also look into the Teese stuff...I don't care for the the Fulltone housing..Modding a wah is a pretty expensive way to go,unless you just change a few caps and resistors..Just the pot and inductor,is around $60...If you go DPDT switch for true bypass, that's another $10 or so...Thats just parts..

Re: Modding my Vox vs. Buying a Fulltone Clyde Standard

Wide sweep? it's not for me then... the sweep of my Vox is a little too wide for me - I don't even use the whole range.

Do I really need a new pot and inductor? I'm not unhappy with the tone... it could use some minor tweaking but it's more about the LED and power source for me...

Powersource....LED's....
Wah just sounds the best with a battery....nothing new there.
LED for what??
So you can "see" it is on or off....
:D

Re: Modding my Vox vs. Buying a Fulltone Clyde Standard

if wahs should not have leds, then no pedals should have led indicators. In fact....why bother even labelling the knobs on an amp - or a pedal?
Now excuse me while i practice my theremin.

The inductor is one of the key changes to getting the vocalness from a wah..Whenever I've done wah mods,I always replaced the pot and the inductor with better than the stock stuff..

This is why I sold my Fulltone Clyde Deluxe....I have a used VOX on the way to tweak. I have a Fasel laying around here somewhere. I'll do true bypass with an LED too......

The red fasel is ok,but there are currently better inductors available...I like the Whipple inductor and have used them since they came out..I also love the Fulltone inductors, but these aren't for sale retail any longer..Lucky I still have a couple.

Mr Absolute.....haha
Why the %¤/%¤(& would one have a LED on a wah??
Waste of batterylife......perhaps several switchable voicings.....
Build in coffee brewer and a drawer for strings and picks....and GPS tracker if it got lost!!!
And Googlemaps if you get lost yourself....:)

Hehe yeah John no LEDS, no powersupply......it is like oldschool fuzz.....don't sound good with a supply.....

Mod the vox, have fun...
;)
