Hi!
I very like Warren De Martini tone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jvzw_1yvVGk&t=121s
He uses JB here, this guitar is old so has Model JB or JBJ.
Modern JB doesn't give me what I want, so I'm looking for differences.
I read that Model JB and JBJ, and Antiquity JB has roughcast A5 so I will change it.
I wonder if these models had copper foil shielded coils like the modern jb?
I am also wondering if there is a difference in the sound of SH and TB?
Warren has SH-4 on this guitar, you can see it in the pictures on the internet

What is your modern JB "not" doing that you want it to do?

What does the rest of your rig look like (guitar, amp, etc)?

99% of "JBJ" era pickups had polished mags, not roughcast. Common misconception.

The earliest models, labeled "The JB Model", more often came with roughcast mags, but NOT always (I've owned more examples of both types than anyone alive, so I'm speaking from experience)

There is very little, if any, difference between the SH and TB versions from a sound perspective. You should be able to get a solid DeMartini sound from both. But if you want to be period-correct and rule out any possible discrepancies, SH is the way to go

Also, copper shielding of the coils is relatively new in the Duncan world. Older JBs do not have this shielding. However, if you're going through the hassle and risk of swapping mags and removing the shielding, which can damage the thin coil wire easily, I would strongly suggest just replacing the pickup instead.

i dont think all jbs have the copper foil, only the trembuckers (all trembuckers) that ive seen. i have a modern jb and theres no copper foil around the coils

Before you replace it with another one, try adjusting the pickup height and pole pieces. Also it may help to switch between a 250k volume pot and a 500k volume pot, or vice versa.

No, it isn't the magnet that makes the difference, they're wound differently creating subtle differences. I would focus on Mincer's advice but if you're set on buying a new pickup, just score a JBJ or an '80s JB.' They're pretty nice and worth having.

Any given guitarist's tone (Warren DeMartini included) on record is a combination of components:

Guitar, pickup, amp, speaker, pedals etc.

And also studio equipment:

Mics, mic pres', console, console EQ, compressors, EQ, tube, tape and transformer saturation, reverb, delay, modulation, etc.

You have to take a holistic approach if you're looking to get realistically close tone-wise; one component (such as the pickup) is not enough.

Well, tonally, that clip isn't the best to be picking apart the sound. There is a short delay on there that is way up, or maybe just the room.

As for the JB's - I have never had any trouble getting the Ratt / Warren sound with any JB guitar.

What is the rest of your rig???
