Modeling Amp ???

Looking for a new practice amp and have narrowed my search down to either a Vox AD30VT or a Line 6 Spider III 75wt. any advice/concerns on either of the above or other suggestions? thanks

Re: Modeling Amp ???

Go for the vox. To my ears it sounds a lot better than the spider which sounds too digital and boxy.
If I wanted tube-like sound i'd choose the vox.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

spiders arent my thing. like Foeburner said, its really digital and i'd never ever get it.

good choices are actually the VOX AD30VT or even a Tech 21 Trademark 30 or 60 amp

Re: Modeling Amp ???

I have a vox and I really like it. It does a good job on the various models. Nothing is perfect but it really does react in a tube-like manner.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

Lots of guys around the forum have said that the AD30VT doesn't sound so great with the stock speaker. I'd recommend the Tech 21 Trademark 60 or even the Roland Cube 60 instead, unless you're looking to change the stock speaker in the AD30VT.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

My advise is to stick with the blue grill Vox's. They have more versatility.
In particular, the best modeler for a good price is a AD60 or AD120 head, and put it on a good speaker cab.

Modelers really sound the best when paired with the same kind of quality cab you'd use with a tube amp.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

thanks for the advice, sounds like the Line 6 is not the choice of anyone.. think I need to get to Guitar Center and plug in.........I spent 5 minutes plugged into each one and did not think the 6 sounded that bad... need to clean my ears before my next comparison trip...

I LIKE Line 6 products. However, the Spider is not their best product.

I vote for Vox as well.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

I like both. My friend has a Vox that sounds great but the higher string sound a bit thin to me. I had a Line6 Spider III just recently and only got rid of it because I wanted something to be able to play with through headphones and it's sound didn't quite hold up through headphones. However as a practice amp it was quite nice. The higher strings didn't sound thin at all. I actually really liked it but I have my Dual Recto so had no reason to keep it.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

Definately the Vox. If Gearjoneser says it's good, then it's good. However, don't forget about the Boss GT-6 or GT-8. I've had my -6 for about 4 years now, and love it to death. It has a ton of good amp models, some very good stock patches...the ability to make your own patches, cab modling as well for 4x12, 2x12, ect. It also has almost every Boss stomp box built into it, as well as some others like the Ratt, TS9 and a couple of others. The rest of the effects are very good too, including delay and reverb.

Just something else to throw in the mix. Price is right, at about $400.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

Unless they've changed the setup, the L6 Spider amps only have the L6 amp models. It's on the more expensive amps and the PODs that you get the "real" amp models.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

Unless you're looking for a practice amp and really don't care much about tone, then I would avoid the lower end vox modelers.

Get a tech 21.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

The Spiders are terrible, period. I haven't tried the IIIs yet but assume they're like the I and IIs.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

I went with the Pot XT Live.... I moved from a stand-alone house with plenty of distance to crank it up into an appartment LITERALLY on top of someone... I spend alotta time trying to write songs and such, and to be honest with you, these models don' sound bad at all....

Line 6 doesn't necessarily model the amps themselves, but rather the amps BEING MIC'd....

I was trying to get a tone from an album I was listening too, and the end result was VERY close to the original tone....

I wouldn't gig with one, but they serve a purpose... I got JCM800/412/ sound in my living room, and the neighbors had no idea I was even playing....

Re: Modeling Amp ???

I have a Rocktron Taboo Twin & it blows all those away. Too bad they are discontinued. basically it's a Rocktron Voodu Valve in combo form. SO if you are looking at solid state consider perhaps a Rocktron Prophecy with a power amp. by the way you can read my review of the TT on harmonycentral.com.
I get a lot of e mails about that review (positive). If not try a POD. There is this guy that recorded an album with a band called Talisman & some other band (don't remember the name) anyways, he had great tones & it was a POD. someone posted on a harmony central "check out this guys live tone!!!" Then the guy posted & stated it was a POD which freaked out a lot of the tube amp purists. Anyways I'm EXTREMELY happy with mine as it allows me a versatility I wouldn't be able to have without bookoo bucks. Check out my review.

Re: Modeling Amp ???

Plugged into 5>6 today and picked up the AD30VT, with my style it had the best tone in the store in the $300.00 price range....
