Modelling/mfx setups

Hi all,

First of all, a bit of a disclaimer... I am fully aware tube amps are awesome which is why I use them in my main band!

That said, I am playing in some amateur musical theatre productions. Essentially flexibility and convenience are king so I am curious whether going down the modelling/mfx route would work best. I happen to already own a Boss GT6 which I use with a Roland cube 15 for home practice. That does the job fine for that however in the past I always found it tough to use mfx units in general at proper volumes.

Granted, the GT6 has been superseded several times over now and I don't doubt the technology has improved. Fast forwarding to 2015, what should I check out? I am open to mixing multi effect floorboards with amps, or using a fully loaded amp. Chances are it may be handy if I can plug into the PA as well.

By the way I haven't ruled out using one of my valve amps completely, I am just looking to explore all the options.

Thanks in advance for your assistance

Re: Modelling/mfx setups

I have one of the older GNX multipedals from Digitech
The models are good, sound accurate
But are idealized

I also have a couple of the Joyo "character pedal" clones

They reproduce the Fender and Marshall tones fairly well they do have a hiss if the drive is dimed, but are responsive to playing dynamics just like the real amps

Both of these need some sort of pa or powered speaker

But the character pedal can sit.right on your pedal board for a grab and go type thing

The Digitech is your pedal board

Re: Modelling/mfx setups

Thanks for the suggestion. I am mainly thinking about multi effect/amp modelling boards as opposed to individual stomps. Given the nature of the shows having presets ready to go at the touch of a button is the Ideal way forwar. Either that or invest in more pedals for a massive pedal board into my amp (which I would need to run relatively quiet anyway).

How do you tend to use your digitech? Do you gig with it? If so, into a guitar amp or into the PA?

Cheers

Re: Modelling/mfx setups

With the Digitech
I just need a powered speaker
Straight to PA would work just fine

The amp models include speaker sims

On one preset.
I have the expression pedal set to sweep between a driven amp and an acoustic

So that the one preset gives me a wide.range

The pedal can.be assigned ever how you want it
To sweep any parameter

Or.between amp models

Or as I have it

Sounds neat. I will keep that in mind. In the past I found using amp modellers and multieffects hard work when jamming with bands. I guess there were just too many variables being thrown in the mix, particularly when chucking it in front of an amp which will already be pulling the overall sound in one direction. That said that was years ago and I know a lot more now than I did then so I am willing to revisit with an open mind. Thanks

Re: Modelling/mfx setups

Yea leave the amp at home

My GNX 3000 has bass models and drum loops

When I set up to play bass at my buddy's house
I AM the rhythm section

Haha sounds awesome, although I won't be going that far! There will already be a bass player, drummer and so on there, as well as a small friggin orchestra! Essentially I just need to get on with as little fuss as possible.

Re: Modelling/mfx setups

What sort of stuff do you do? Do you use the POD just for effects, then the dt25 for the core amp sound?

I use the DT25 as a valve power amp, which can be set to match the amp sims I have previously set. The POD amp sims can be used in preamp mode, if plugged into a power amp, or in full amp mode, if using headphones, full range speakers or for recording via USB.

Also comes packed with around 100 effects pedals sims, quite good for the money.
