Modified Cry Baby

I want to know what you think of putting a 105Q Dunlop Cry Baby Bass Wah in the Dime Cry Baby from Hell Pedal with the 105Q Controls and Auto-Return Function? Can the JB95 Dunlop Joe Bonamassa Cry Baby Wah & the JH1D Jimi Hendrix Cry Baby Wah be placed in the Buddy Guy Cry Baby Pedal with LED Indicators, JB95/JH1D Switch, and Volume & Q Controls?

Re: Modified Cry Baby

Why so many pedals in one? Many of the signature crybabys have minor minor minor MINOR changes in the PCB that make a very subtle difference in sound.

For example: The Jimi Hendrix wah is exactly the same as the GCB-95 except for the finish and ONE capacitor, the sweep capacitor, is changed. The change isn't even huge, a difference in .012uF (standard is .01uF, JH is .022uF).

The crybaby that is the most different from the original is the Kirk Hammett wah. Other than that they are mostly the same (Jerry Cantrell wah has a control to limit sweep, you can do that my just repositioning the rack to be more on the bass side, and has an increased midrange. The Slash wah has a built in distortion etc. Mostly the same pedals just different enclosures). I recommend either modding it yourself trying different inductors, valued resistors, valued capacitors, as well as your choice of LED.

If you still find the wahs different, more power to you, but why not just have them all lined up together? Because the idea of having all of those pedals in one is absurd. Either that or just find one wah pedal that does something very well that you like - unless you are into and open to rack wahs in which case I can't help you because I know nothing about them.

I hope this helps and I don't mean to come of as arrogant, snooty, or rude at all. Best of luck.

Re: Modified Cry Baby

Also, if you like the idea of modding yourself, here is an excellent beginner's guide:

http://www.wah-wah.co.uk/diy.html

And these values are not set, just a recommendation saying what degree of values will do what. For example, my "vocal mod" is an ~180K resistor, my "midrange mod" is an ~6K5 resistor, my "gain/bass response" being a resistor about 300 ohms, "volume mod" being a 50-something-K resistor, sweep range is about .033uF, with a repositioned rack that I can't really explain, increased range by removing stoppers on both ends of the rocker, and a red fasel inductor that I'm not too fond of and I think I'll change it to a yellow fasel inductor eventually.

What I like possibly is not what you'll also like though. Experimentation is really the only way to go.

Is there a summary of the different signature models and what modifications were made for each? I'm kind of fascinated to know.

Re: Modified Cry Baby

I want the 105Q with the look of the Dimebag Wah Pedal with only the 105Q Q & Volume control and Auto-Return Function. I also want the JB95 & JH1D together with the look of the Buddy Guy Wah Pedal with a Q and Volume Controls.

Re: Modified Cry Baby

I want to know if you can you put a ferrari enzo chassis into a lamborghini countach body, with a dodge viper cockpit, a set of Hummer wheels, and a Pinto engine, or maybe like...a dirty lawnmower engine. YEAH!

I suggest contacting dunlop with your questions.

You can google the schematics for each one. If you google the Hendrix one for example, you'll see it is exactly the same with the exception of one capacitor. Dunlop has spoken about the Jerry Cantrell modifications themselves in a video; same with the Slash wah. The reason the Kirk Hammet is so different is because he uses a heavily modified rack wah setup, and Dunlop tried to capture it all in one pedal. It is a very good attempt, but to my knowledge Hammett still uses the rack wah.

Now if only Hammett realized it is possible to turn the wah off. :banghead:

Do you even know what a Q factor is and how it works? Let alone a wah pedal? In your own words?

You're asking for a great deal in one pedal, and you have to understand first a wah pedal can only house so much without getting into rack units. Also, how do you plan to efficiently and effectively switch which pedal circuit is in use on one enclosure? This is why I recommend either a) modifying your own pedal, b) having someone make you a custom pedal, or c) running the separate pedals you want in a chain. I do not know of anyone off the top of my head who will make you a custom pedal, so I cannot help you there. Also, you must stay realistic in what you are asking for.

I can also guarantee you that even if you contact Dunlop, they cannot legally put any circuit inside the Dimebag or Buddy Guy wah other than the Dimebag and Buddy Guy circuit. It is THEIR signature, and only THEY can approve of changes. Dimebag is dead so that is unlikely and left entirely to his estate, and Buddy Guy himself would have to give Dunlop permission to put anything different into HIS pedal. Dunlop is bound by contract and will be taken to court, lose the case, and lose their ability to make these specific signature models if they break the contract. This is the same reason the Duncan custom shop cannot modify say a Slash signature pickup, not even something as simple as making it 4-conductor stock, because they are bound by contract and cannot release anything to do with Slash or advertised as a Slash model without his direct consent.

Yeah... I'd contact Dunlop in all honesty. See if they'll build you a custom one. Even if they won't I'm sure there are people out there that would.

Either that or get a plain Wah pedal enclosure, drill it out as needed and cannibalize a few pedals.
