Moding a 59' neck.

I have a 2 conductor, long leg 59 that I would like to change to 4 conductor, short leg(maybe swap the legs with a pickup from another guitar where it doesn't matter) Is this possible to do myself, or should I just sell it and buy a new one ?

It is possible to do it yourself, once you have a pretty decent amount of soldering skill under your belt.

Re: Moding a 59' neck.

There is some delicate surgery involved, but it's a piece of cake if you know what you're doing and have some experience with a soldering iron.

I have quite a bit of soldering experience ! So I'm pretty sure I could pull it off, what do I need to do ? And for the base plate can I just swap it for a Duncan from another guitar where it doesn't matter ?

Re: Moding a 59' neck.

That video is ok, but I need to stress the importance of knowing which wire is which. In that vid, he is using a pup with two slug coils. Your pup ('59) has a screw and a slug coil.

On your pup, the coil wire that is connected to the ground is the "start" wire of the screw coil. That will be soldered to the green wire in your cable.
The other wire of that coil (which connects to the two coils) is the "finish" wire of the screw coil. That is the wire that should be cut to separate the two coils (like the red wire in the video). That will be soldered to the red wire in your cable.
The remaining part of the wire that connected the two coils that you just cut, is the "finish" wire of the slug coil. That will be soldered to the white wire in your cable.
The last coil wire is the "start" wire of the slug coil. That will be soldered to the black wire in your cable.
The bare wire in your cable is the one that is soldered to the baseplate.

Re: Moding a 59' neck.

It's easy to do and you DON"T need 4 leads for coil split or spin-a-split, nor are the hands of a surgeon required. I just explained how in the thread about 4 conductor PU's costing so much.

That's true. But the OP wasn't just asking about splits, however. And if you're going to be in there doing any soldering, might as well do 4 conductor. That leaves open the option to split to either coil and to wire oop, if ever wanted.
