Monoprice strats?

Hey all - I've been looking to buy a cheap strat body to throw on the extra neck I have lying around. I had been thinking about looking for a MIM body or something along those lines, but for the price that a used one is going for it looks like I could just buy a Squier or something, keep the body and part out the rest (I have my own electronics, hardware, etc, but it would be nice not to have to drill holes). I I've seen those Monoprice strats online and they've been getting pretty solid reviews. Anybody out there have experience with one? Are they comparable to one of the Squier strats? I've seen people comparing them to MIM Fenders, but you know how online reviews can be. :)

Likened to Fender MIM quality by whom?

If you are willing to part out and sell on, why not simply sell the current extra neck and buy a complete new instrument? At the very least, you can be absolutely certain that the neck and body will fit each other. If you have nice aftermarket pickups, install them on whatever new guitar you purchase.

Re: Monoprice strats?

Better than nothing but there's a reason why Monoprice can sell a whole guitar for a fraction of what Warmoth charges for a body. Whether the difference is worth the money is a personal choice.

A lot of reviews online were saying they were comparable - like ToneReport.com said something like they were "equivalent or better to any Standard Stratocaster".

The neck I have is a Jimmie Vaughan one that I really liked, so I wanted to keep it - I started parting it out a while back, but changed my mind after I sold the body. :) Just looking for an inexpensive way to get that neck bolted back onto a decent piece of wood. Probably better to save up and buy a legit body instead of going the cheap route.

I AM curious if there's anybody out there who has one...I don't always trust online reviews, and I keep hearing that they have a good reputation but I haven't yet run into anybody who actually has played one.

Re: Monoprice strats?

I would much rather get a used Squier Standard or "SE" body than that Mono thing. Actually that's what I've built my last few parts-casters out of-Squier bodies will be the right shape, none of them since the mid/late 80s have been plywood. If you know for sure it's an "SE" or Standard body, it'll be full depth, too so any trem will fit in it. I bought a thin body and shaved down the fulcrum block so it wouldn't stick out the back. Oh yeah, the Mono guitar may not have the right shape/screw locations, you'll end up having to move a bunch of stuff to use it. I did the same with a GFS body, and got a "Rock Audio" body after that, and had the exact same problem- the neck mounting holes were crooked in the pocket, the bridge holes were in the wrong place, no pick guard would fit without cutting it up, etc. It wasn't worth it to me to have to "mod" it so much to be able to use it, and when I got the Squier SE body everything just bolted right up without having to change anything. I'd get the Mono thing if i was gonna keep the whole thing to have a "beater" or something, but not to put a good neck on.

Re: Monoprice strats?

I wouldn't take that thing if someone gave it to me. It has to be complete garbage at that price.

Check out Stewart MacDonald's clearance section. You can buy a solid swamp ash poly finished Tele body in white for like $130 bucks or so. Your Strat neck will bolt up to it fine, and it'll be at least as good as a used MIM Tele body.

I haven't been that impressed with the quality of the other things I've bought from Monoprice.

You've noticed that, too?

HDMI cables? Good. Budget wall recessed speakers? Pretty darn good. TV mounts? Outstanding. Electronics (car adapters, etc.)? Eh, not reliable. Guitars? Who the heck knows, but I'm not about to find out with a Collings in my lap.

I visited the Monoprice store in SoCal not long after they started offering guitars. It was about what you'd expect at the price point. The on Monoprice MI item that has my attention is their electronic drum set. List is $329 and they regularly offer 10% off. It probably wouldn't survive a tour but it could be a nice addition to a jam room where you're trying to manage volume.
