More electric slide in dropped D tuning

I put this backing track together using the Loopology loops from Adobe Audition. I then overdubbed the slide solo and filmed it. Turned out kinda neat, I thought.

That's the old Strat that Seymour set up for me when I bought it in London in '73. I use SD pickups, a heavy brass slide, heavy strings, and this was going through my DigiTech RP 100 as usual.

I liked it a lot ... I gotta try a brass slide ... I've always used glass and standard tuning. What's the Drop D tuning again?

Re: More electric slide in dropped D tuning

Thanks, doveman. Dropped D is just the bass string down to D. It's basically standard tuning.

I'll have to try that ... easy to get to and from ... would have some advantages on the low side. Yeah ... I'll give that a try.

Re: More electric slide in dropped D tuning

Bump ... you guys need to listen to this song ... it's really good.

Also:

I tried the DROP D ... that is such a simple tuning change but it opens up so many possibilities. I had never thought of it. There are several places where you can get multiple string chords ... I think more options than the OPEN E tuning.

I have almost always tuned standard ... this has a lot of possiblities and is much easier to get to and from ... if you're in standard tuning.

I'm going to try to write my next song using this tuning.

:bandit: I'm stealing it! Thanks!

Wow . . . that was sweet. I love the tone you were getting too. Just a nice amount of reverb. Great playing.

Re: More electric slide in dropped D tuning

yes, it's a great slide tuning: those three bass strings give you that 'open' sound but the guitar is still basically in standard, so no need to re-map the fretboard when you're playing slide.

Here are a couple more in dropped D:

This one is an exerpt from the DVD I put together on slide in standard and dropped D:

Open tunings are great, of course, traditional and all that, but if you want to get away from all the licks and riffs and inversions that you hear every day coming from sliders, standard is a very rich slide environment. You can find every chord flavor going: major, major7th, minor, minor 7th, 9th, 7th, aug, dim, 11th, sus4 ... you just need to know where to look. :-)

Hey Kirk ... I stopped by and joined your forum today. Looks like a really cool site. Spent a little while looking around there today. I liked the above post ... especially the dobro tune. Tried the Drop D today ... excellent!

Re: More electric slide in dropped D tuning

Thanks, doveman.

It's hard to believe that I had a mere couple of hundred members there just over a year ago. My girlfriend Clancy took over the running of it and we're now up over 35,000! A great bunch of twangers, too, of all levels. Thanks for joining up and joining in.

I, too, just got back from checking out your website, Kirk. That's a pretty outstanding place to go for a ton of information and instruction regarding technique and equipment, let alone being able to hear so many of those great tracks of yours! And a Seymour Duncan Forum member to boot!!
Cheers!

....Bob

OK ... Luv Kirk's stuff ... ordered his materials today.

I've been playing since '67 and I'm always willing to try learning something new. I'm also a slide player ... spending all my time in standard tuning. Really like the Drop D experience in the last couple of weeks.

I'm pretty convinced there may be something to learn here. I'll let you guys know in a few weeks if the method/DVDs/etc. helped me. If I can play a little more like Kirk on the slide ... it will be money well spent. :notworthy

Re: More electric slide in dropped D tuning

Received the materials today. I have to say it was very interesting for an old player. I think Kirk has developed a fresh way of teaching musical technique. But it's more than that ... if appears to be a fresh way to look at creating melodies. One thing I'd like to change about my playing is to become more melodic and less scale like ... I think this is an interesting approach toward that end.

The materials I bought cost about the same thing as a pedal might cost. So it's reasonably priced for me ... if it teaches me something new. The Plane Talk book with the DVD is sort of the core. I also bought the slide DVD and a computer disc that plays video lessons related to the 12-bar blues that was interesting.

I think the slide DVD shows a lot of tricks for muting, vibrato, etc. I was glad to find that many were things I do now BUT if I were just starting to play slide, these tricks would be mysteries. For instance, I mute my strings the same way that Kirk teaches but it developed for me over years. It would have been nice to have someone show me that in the beginning.

I would recommend it for new players ... but I think that guys that have been playing a while might find a way to break into some new lines. I think it will help me do that ... there ya go.

Kudos Kirk ...
