more feeback

I've got a customer who's got a JB in the bridge of his guitar (its a covered JB) and he wishes "he could get more nice warm natural feeback when he wanted to"

I'm thinking of putting a DD or a custom in the bridge to solve this problem
my theory is

1) the extra wax potting the covers require mutes more feeback - so an open coil pickup might feed back more
2) a large ceramic magnet would prob help too

any suggestions

Re: more feeback

What does he mean by feedback? Microphonic whistling? Couldn't imagine anyone wanting more of that!

Is he really looking for more sustain and more harmonics taking off and whistling into the stratospere?

I don't think there is a better pickup than the JB for that but the Distortion is a JB with a ceramic magnet. More mids, more sizzle on top. Maybe that's more what he's looking for.

Good luck! Lew

Well, he's a touring musician and is probably just expressing himself improperly
what I think he wants is to be able to walk up to the amp, and get some nice feedback

I built the guitar so the sustain is definitely there - over 30 seconds - i use a very long large neck tenon
and he plays through a marshall dsl50 and a 4x12

does this change the picture at all

and am i right about the covers

Re: more feeback

With the cover removed the tone should be a little brighter and more present. I hear it as being a little livlier and more responsive too. So I'd say yes: remove the cover.

Re: more feeback

i've heard that the covers may take a little top end off - just a drop
but my real question is, is the extra wax potting the covers require quieting some of my man's desired feeback

i ask you because you are the pickup man

FWIW, some think Seths feed back - they could be right, depending on the amp ... I usually am trying to control feedback, so I don't know, but Seth's are pretty responsive .. they're not potted, of course

he probably wouldn't want a Seth though, since they're not as hot as a JB

I doubt it. I really doubt if wax potting is making it more difficult for your customer to get notes to take off and feedback. But it will make it almost impossible to get that cover off! :laugh2: Lew
