More questions on Antiquities for strat...

I had my mind all made up to go for the Antiquities Surfers after some great input I got on the forum here.

Then I spent some time with the 2 strats i own. One has Tex Mex pups, the other APS-1's. i noticed the APS can handle more OD without losing string definition, and one of the Moderators here told me they thought A2 mags in general were good for that. The funny thing is, the Tex Mex only really sound right to me with some breakup in the tone.

So now I am thinking, I want a strat sound, but, I use some over the top OD sometimes, how well do the Surfers handle lots of OD? If I go Texas Hot, how much of the traditional strat tone with A5 magnets am I really giving up?

The Surfers do very well with a ton of overdrive IMO.

Well, as said in the other threads, to me the Ant1 ("Texas hot", stupid name) do sound like a well-aged "real" Strat clean, and they definitely handle overdrive better.

The truth is that there is really nothing that anybody on an Internet forum can do to help you. It is clear that the Ant1s will be a bit better for smooth breakup without the classic Fender single coil "sizzleoff", I don't think anybody doubts that. But whether they are good enough at clean chimey is way too much guitar, rig and ear dependent.

Myself, I like A2 better in almost everything, so what do I know, maybe my taste adjusted? I just think the Ant1s came out right the first time.

Too true. I am just really having trouble making up my mind!!! Thanks again.

I have the Surfers and the Texas Hots. I use a Bogner Shiva with a modded TS9 in front. I set the TS9 with the gain all the way down and adjust the volume to give me like a clean boost. In the Clean side of the Bogner this adds just a nice amount of breakup, and if I turn the volume down on the guitar it cleans up nicely. When I engage the drive channel on the Bogner it is a little louder and has a much thicker tone, but both the Surfers & the Texas Hots hold together in all situations. I do not loose anything IMHO with either set with any form of drive.

I also have a Komet 60 which is the most articulate amp I have ever played through. In the Komet I use a different OD. I use a custom made 808 on steroids. It does not have a lot more gain then a regular 808, but has a few more options on how you can adjust it. I tend to run most of my amps fairly clean, and get my breakup from driving the tubes & I use an OD more as a volume boost.

The point of all of this is.... I don't think you are going to loose anything with either set. As I said before I have both. I tend to lean more towards the Surfers, but I think the reason is more about the feel of the guitar then the tone of the pickups. Both of these picups are excellent and you would struggle to find something better in the "Vintage" sounding realm.

Cool. Thanks for indulging me again!
