More String experimentation stuff...

Re: More String experimentation stuff...

I'd also add that your pick type/material and guage has a marked effect on feel and tone as well. Just a simple change in pick material can make a sloppy feeling guitar feel much tighter...a tight guitar feel "easier", change the brightness, etc.

I've got about 30 different types of picks of various guages and materials around here too to mess with :laugh2:

Haha, that's nothing......I once played a guitar with 13-65s on it. :smack:

Those were amazingly heavy. It played like a bass.

Re: More String experimentation stuff...

Well i did a string test 2 months ago.
I tested 3 brands. All of them where coated ,long life strings.
Bending is not an issue for me.I mostly interest in tone ,stability, durability and feel.
I play 24,75 " guitar.But neck and string thru and 24 frets.
11-50 (52) gauge strings are my Favs.I play mostly D standart and Dropped C
The first candidade was Elixir.Great tone out of the package ...It was like magic. But ,it begins to annoy ,since it's too bright and sparkling. And the overtones where just not right. It's a different beast. And it doesn't last that long.after 5 hours of playing ,it begun to loose it's sparkle...and the Overtones left the building.

The seccond candidate was The Dean Markley Blue Steels.Great strings ,and nice feeling. But the darkest off all.The high strings had a weird overtone structure ,and it was hard to make them scream. It doesn't fit with the PATB-2 at all...And the freshness disappeard after 4 days..about 12 hours of playing.

The last one,and the winner of coated Strings is the DR RED DEVILS.
i play the set since end of November.HAd 3 gigs and play 3 hours a day. They sound very good.Altough coated ,they feel just right.Sound really good. Not bright as Elixir ,not dark as DM ,just right.PATB2 likes it alot. The harmonics are great too.Really good controlled ,and balanced.
Picking for a long time scratches the coating and the strings get their Original color. But just on the Picked surface.
I recommend them to everyone. They are expensive ,as the other too.But they really last long (i allways change the strings every month actually)..The tone is still great. And they look still killer!

Re: More String experimentation stuff...

I started with 11-46, then I've switched to 8-38(and that was REALLY loose , but I've learnt my first and second steps on those) After swapping pickups to duncans i thougt "oh well... maybe I'll try heavier gauge" and there was 10-46.
Now i'm using set of 10-46(rotosound) on my strat and 11-52 Blue steels on my gibsonish Washburn. Maybe I'll give a try on Daddario EXL 145 thats 12-54 and with third string plain, what do you think?
