Openness / vowel-like sounds aren't really inherent to Duncan pickups. They're more percussive.

The open "aww" sound is pretty much the trademark of Dimarzio's, though (which is why I use them often).

Re: Most Vowel-Like SD pup tone

I'd say the Antiquity or Custom Custom when it comes to humbuckers, though I can get it with the 59B too.

I'd say the Antiquity Texas Hot Custom and Twangbanger when it comes to single coils.

I think of that vowel like sound as having an "OW" character to it.

IMO, the mids need to be prominant but at the same time have a sense of space/air/texture to them to sound vowel like.

When I think of vowel like tone, I think of Clapton's tone with Cream or Eric Johnson's tone when he's doing his take on Clapton with Cream. It's not a bright trebley sound or an overly bass heavy sound: it's more of a bowed violin like tone that I think of when I think of a vowel like tone...or a muted trumpet, like Miles Davis' tone.

A good humbucker through a cranked Marshall or Matchless with the guitar's volume control full up and the guitar's tone control turned down a bit gets it for me.

I think of it more as the typical sound that Michael Schenker, or Tom Sholtz get...kinda like a half-****ed crybaby....

Thats why I went with the Custom...cos it's pretty close to that sound...and the whole reason I started using them....they accentuate the low mids, mids, upper mids, and highs without getting jangly on the top, or bouncy/round on the bottom.

Maybe it is more of an "OW" sound, but the bowed violin tone and the Miles Davis reference describe it pretty well.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

I would say the Seth Lover has a nice vowel like tone.

When I hear vowel-like, the dimarzio paf pro and paf joe springs to mind.

Re: Most Vowel-Like SD pup tone

I remember a thread back a few months ago about the vowel sounds and was thinking that the conclusion was PAF style pups were the way to go, anyone rememeber anything like that?

Re: Most Vowel-Like SD pup tone

I think Claptons lead tone on "Leyla" when i hear the word "vowel".

To me, it's easiest to get with an overdriven Marshall or other fine mid-gain valve amp, and neck singlecoils on a 21 fret guitar.

Cheers!
