Motley crue mick mars tones...do you think ceramic or JB type pickups?

I really love some of mick mars' tones on his songs, like in kickstart my heard and same ol situation...and pretty much everything he does. And i get something pretty good myself with the ENGL along those lines and am not asking this because i want to try and get hit tone...just interested what pickup types you all think he would be using.

I personally think it would be along the lines of a ceramic magnet humbucker for lots of the stuff, its got a fair bit of crunch going...although i do get great tones with my JB much like some of his.

What do you think?

Per the interviews he gave in that period he was using 59's in his Kramers.

wow really, wouldnt have guessed that!

There was a thread here a week or so ago about the pickups he used and he was using a JB in the albums. I never heard anything about 59's, but it wouldn't surprise me. His early tone on Shout At The Devil and earlier stuff was a Dimarzio Super Distortion which is ceramic.

95% of the tone on Dr Feelgood are his Soldano amps. I played my Ernie Ball Axis through the Line6 Pod Soldano setting, through a Marshall and nailed the Kickstart my Heart tone. You also have to downtune to D. The downtuning itself changes the tone, I seem to be able to more easily pull off harmonics when downtuned to Eb or D, had to do with the sloppiness of the strings.

That's funny I heard he used JB's almost exclusively in the 80's...

That´s the way I remember it as well.

But the question is worded a bit funny anyway. What exactly do you mean by "do you think ceramic or JB type pickups?" The Custom is a "JB-Type" to my ears any by ma derfinition of JBType/Modern. As is the Distortion, and both use ceramic magnets.... ;)

I've also heard that he used the stock Schaller humbuckers in his USA Kramers. This was before the USA Kramers begin coming stock with JBs. I think the Schallers were very similar to the JB, but I've never played one personally.

I'm pretty sure he was using a Super Distortion for the first two albums, then a JB in the mid and late 80s. I remember hearing that he had a '59 in at least one of his guitars, but I would go with the JB if I were you. Don't forget, all their songs are tuned down a full step.

Cool thread. It was a Super Distortion on the early stuff, then a '59. But I've heard the '59 was a Rolph pup.

I have played the schaller humbucker that came in the Barettas. I have also played the super distortion comparing the two back to back. They sound Very similar.

I think Ryan hit the nail on the head. Super on the very early stuff, and JB on the Theatre stuff.

Just my .02.........
