Move my amp from 12'' to 2X8''? What do you think?

I am allways having funny ideas of how customize my gear. The last one was about the speaker of my Engl 50 Combo (50 Watts). It comes stock with a 12'' Celestion Silver Series. I know it isn't the best on earth but it sounds pretty decent. Anyway, thinking in replacing it, came the idea of fitting two 8'' speakers. I already thought in replacing with two 10'' but in won't fit inside.

I know I can build a cabinet and leave the original speaker alone, but this is just an idea of how a 50 Watts, all tube amp combo, will sound with 2x8'' speakers.

Any opinions about this idea?

Can't really recall any 8'' speakers myself; I'd definitely research your options before you go through the hassle of building a cabinet for it. I dig 10'' speakers myself, even if lots of other people believe in just 12'' speakers. It might make a really cool project, but I'd make sure you can find speakers that will work great with your amp before you head into it.

To be honest, I'm guessing the 2 8'' speakers would probably equal about the same amount of fullness as a single 12''. It might just be easier to switch out the 12'' for something else, but the idea of a custom cabinet is pretty cool.

I used to have an old Gibson amp that was kinda like a Tweed Deluxe, the 12 was blown and i put a new baffle and 2 old Jenson 8" in it...I loved it!

Acutally 8's can sound really good... I have a Mesa Boogie cabinet that has 1x12 Vintage 30 Celestion with 4x8 inch 60w celestion speakers and an open back it sounds really good... The 8's have a tighter low end than the 12 does... and actually seem to have less highs but still plenty... I think it would be a pretty cool idea to try...

Thanks guys!! I definetly wil be checking the price of this idea when I change the speaker of my combo... That will be when I have the money!!

Well, I'm going to be having a custom cab built for a 100w head using 2x10s. Hope it has enough fullness!

I played a Vox mini-stack the other day. Not in same league as your Engl, it was a Pathfinder 15 head with a 4x8 bottom. It sounded great, really full and articulate. 8"ers can sound really good!

i built a 4x8 cab, that has a removeable baffle, so that you can change it out to a 2 x10, or 2 x12 (not sure if 2x12 will fit, however...) email me for a sound bite. i didnt use the greatest speakers, just some Quam public addess tupes, you know the kind you see in the ceiling. wasnt terrible, but wasnt great.

Thanks for your inputs!! What's the difference you should expect from a 2x8 in comparison with a 1x12?

I fact I think I don't really mind. Experimenting it's the goal... :D
