Multi-purpose thread

I've got a few questions that have been accumulating.

1. Do they make bass piezos? I've never seen one, but the a/e bass sound is really cool and it would be much easier not to have to switch to one. If it wouldn't work, why?

2. Volumes. How is it possible to manage volumes with one amp? It's gotta be pretty loud to get nice power tube distortion, but at that volume you don't have any headroom. Clean songs just quieter?

3. Distortion pedals. How do they interact with your amp? People always talk about a pedal "driving an amp." Analogue clipping AND tube distortion? Also, how does the sound from a pedal change as the volume goes up?

4. Does the G-Major accept downloadable patches? Does it have a double delay feature (as with two delay pedals at once)? Does anyone use this along with other pedals, like distortion and wah?

Take your pick.

2. Yes, I have a Weber Masss and its great fir low volume practising and even band practise if you want to get that extra bit out of your amp..

Re: Multi-purpose thread

3. It depends...some pedals provide a hotter or slightly different signal (some frequencies boosted) going into the amp, making the amp receive more energy the way 'hot' pickups change the way an amp feels and responds (forgive the non-technical stuff). A non-MV amp can really get goosed by a pedal like a Bad Bob Booster and sound thicker and fatter as if it is turned up louder. As for the volume thing, it depends but if you acheive power tube overdrive/distortion it will really change the way the pedal interacts with the amp, perhaps making it seem like too much of a good thing.

Thanks. Do those attenuators have some sort of footswitch? To define my original question further, making clean and distorted tones at similar volumes. Turn on the attunuator for distortion and off for clean? Or just do clean tones quieter?

I'd just like to have headroom on my clean sounds along with a manageable volume for distortion. I was thinking the best way would be to have a 30w amp for distortion and a 100w amp for clean, and then A/B them. I'm not so intelligent about these matters, though.

That works well in theory. Some tube amps have different positions (aka V1, V2) that control just certain channels or aspects of the tone of the amp. Some tubes break up quicker than others and so does speakers. I'm currently working on getting more headroom with my Bad Cat Hot Cat. Cleans are clean all the way to noon and then it gets thicker, less articulate and starts to clip a bit, so a chinese tube isn't the best for it (chinese often offer more gain and less headroom than others, like JJs).

If you want cleans that stay clean, you'll have to look at the individual manufacturer as every amp is different. Some are prone to breakup early and they have tons of watts. Others stay clean and they're low wattage.

Re: Multi-purpose thread

Nope, At least I haven't heard of an attenuator with a footswitch, Unfortunatly the attenuator makes your clean channel quieter, with my dsl it isn't too big an issue as it has alot of headroom so it stays pretty clean at high attenuation..

Re: Multi-purpose thread

Italic, I think that the new Mesa Lone Star allows you to have the 50 watt thing on one channel and the 100 watt on the other. There's one at the GC in Natick, I think. I know it's not exactly what you are talking about (and I don't know if you like those amps, I'm not suggesting you buy the amp but rather just check it out) ....it might be worth taking a ride to check it out just for kicks to see if the different wattages thing is what you are really looking for.

Re: Multi-purpose thread

I'm going to add another question on the list:

5. Are there any benefits of a stop tail over a string through?

Re: Multi-purpose thread

I had another idea: pedal controls for all effects. Have a tremelo which you can speed up or slow down, a delay which you can lengthen or shorten, a phaser pedal, a reverb pedal... it wouldn't be practical to control all at once, but it would be d*mn cool.
