Multimeter question

Just got VOLTCRAFT VC135 multimeter. Testing cts 500 k pots, and the multimeter on 20M setting, shows 0.47. Tested my Jackson DK2S guitar, and tone pot shows pretty much the same: 0.44 . Tested volume pot of that guitar, and it shows 0.02 . So, i am just confused overall. Looking at youtube videos, people are testing with multimeters 500k pots and it shows .567 . i am testing it with this one and it shows me 0.47 . Can someone explain me, what this is all about?

Re: Multimeter question

Is 0.47 equal to 470k ?

Yes, it is. I looked up that multimeter online and it doesn't appear to have any settings between 200K and 20M, so you'll need to find another meter if you want better resolution around 500K. My cheap POS meter has a 2M setting that I use to meter pots.

Re: Multimeter question

It's strange about this guitar Jackson DK2S.. that wiring online pdf diagram it says, that volume pot is 500 k, tone pot is 500 k, and drive pot is 25 k. i measeured volume pot with multimeter as 25 k, and it's in the size of 500 k pot.. i measured tone pot as 500 k. i measured than drive pot as 500 k, and it's in the size of 25 k pot. don't know the thing about this sustainiac system, i just want to make sure, that volume pot is 500 k. cannot do that, unfortunately, too complicated. i wanted to measure the volume pot, and i hoped it is 500 k. i was suspecious that it is 250 k. than it turned out it's 25 k. going to leave this thing alone, it just drives me insane, and i have no nerves to explore further.

Re: Multimeter question

There is no relation between size and value. You always have to look for figures on the back or use your dmm.

Re: Multimeter question

This sustainiac system in that particular guitar is complicated to figure out.. i don't know, i like the sound of guitar, i like the TB4 on the bridge, i like other two singlecoils.. but when sustainiac is turned off, the guitar actually has less sustain than other two guitars i have. but the sound is really good. i'll leave it alone for now, too complicated. i'll decide if i really need the sustainiac in that Jackson later, for now i rarely use it. Got this guitar used, so i was curious if it is all original, it looks like volume pot has been changed.

Re: Multimeter question

Depending on how the sustainiac is connected to the rest of the circuit, you could be reading a parallel resistance including some of the Preamp. To get a true measurement it needs to be removed from the circuit.

I just reread. Do you think the drive and volume pots are reversed?

Re: Multimeter question

I am thinking about removing sustainiac in the long term to be honest. This is too complicated for me to figure it out, so i am gonna just leave it alone. There's schematic on the internet, but i'd rather start with just installing, replacing standard pots and electronics for the beggining. Internet is full of different informations. Don't have a patience to explore the net right now.

Re: Multimeter question

AlexR: Perfectly.. i just don't use it that much.

Well, you've got a working system....so whats the issue with it as it stands - and why would you remove it if it unless it is compromising the 'off' tone. And if you really had a 25k vol pot where a 500k was supposed to be, then you would have such a muffled muddy mess of tone you'd have never bought the guitar in the first place.
