Multiscale question

So I'm curious about this, even though I may never get one, what gauges would be used on a multiscale 7 string? Say I use a light top heavy bottom set on a six, what would have similar tension on a 7 fanned fret?

Re: Multiscale question

What scale lengths?
You will never get a single answer without the scale lengths, since it's what makes all the difference. NOT the fact that it's multi/fanned frets.

I don't have a multi-scaled 7 string, but I have 2 6s. And they're VERY different. The Strandberg is 25"-25.5" which makes no difference whatsoever. I use 11-52s for Eb. I'd use 10-52s for standard just on a 'standard' scale 25.5" guitar.

The Kiesel 6 is 25.5"-26.5", and I just don't use a dropped set of strings. That's pretty much it. It's tuned to D standard or drop C and I use a set of 12s on it.

So depending on your scale lengths, you will get very different answers.

Re: Multiscale question

Use whatever's comfy for you. I use 9.5-46 on my 6-string Strandberg (standard tuning).

From the great Perry Ormsby
Due to the increased scale length on the bass side, the tension of the strings increases. We recommend you try dropping a gauge on the bottom end, for example, if you usually use 9-46's, try 9-42's.
