I want to purchase one but have never messed with one. I was wondering which ones are good and pretty easy to use. I don't have alot of money and i like analog better than digital. But it really doesnt matter. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Once agian I am new to recorders and dont really know anything about them.

Re: multitrack recorder help

The cassette-based Tascam recorders are very nice for the money. I had the 424MKIII. You can record 4 channels at the same time, each with its own levels and EQs, and also add 2 more channels in stereo during mix-down. It can also be used as a 6 channel mixer in front of a PA and monitors.

The models cheaper than the 424 have less features: I think you can only record 2 tracks at once, and they have a 2 band EQ (high and low) instead of 3 band (high, low, and sweepable mids) on the 424. The 424 also has 2 different tape speeds. IMO, the Tascam 424 is a very nice little home recording set-up, and works well in a small band setting, too.

I sold mine to get a Boss BR-8 digital 8 track recorder. I like having more tracks and built-in effects and amp modeling on the BR-8, but I hate having to scroll through a menu to do things. I really miss my old 424 with its sliders, knobs, and switches! It was much easier to use, IMO. The only down-side to tape recording is the slight tape hiss you'll get; it's noisier than digital, but still not too bad for home recording. I never really noticed it much at all until I actually compared it to digital. If you've listened to cassette tapes, then you're already used to it.

if you don´t care of going digital try the korg pxr4 pandora digital recorder....dunno the price in the states...i´m going to buy one next month for 380€

very easy to use...multitrack (4 at the time), independent eq for every channel also...a lot of input/output options as long as it has Pc USB connection...so you can edit your demos with software(pro-tool, cubase, etc)...

Re: multitrack recorder help

On my Tascam 424, the manual was very helpful and explains things. If you would get a cassette recorder, there are a few books out there that really go into the hows and whys of recording, mixing, EQing, mike placements, and all that little stuff. I have one called "Using Your Portable Studio" by Peter McIan. Most music stores that sell recorders would carry this book, or something similar. This book goes way beyond what the manual tells you, and is a must-have!

I have a Fostex VF-16 the older model 16 Track. It's Freakin' Fantastic, it has 16 Sliders , 1 for each channel so its easy for mixing, 3 Band eq which i think is pretty easy and actually more convienient to use, as theres 3 buttons, 1 for High,Mid and Low and all you gotta do is press a frequency then select a trak, or multiple Tracks ! Fantastic!
