Mustaine Livewires problem

I am replacing the passive Dean pickups in my Dean Mustaine VMNT with SD Mustaine Livewires.

I bought the pickups and they came with jack, pots, battery terminal, and switch. In short, all there. I used the wiring diagram provided on the Seymour Duncan website here (Diagram below)

I have the following problems...

Jack won't go all the way in, and cuts out. No worries, I may just have to rout the hole deeper or something. Not sure.
It seems that both pickups are on the whole time, volume does not go up or down until the knob is all the way off, then all sound stops. This happens with both volume knobs. Tone knob has no effect.
Playing through my amp, even with a solid state amp set to "Metal Stack", the sound is clean.

Thoughts?
Maybe a different wiring diagram? Did I miss something?

thanks
Taz

Re: Mustaine Livewires problem

It sounds like something isn't attached correctly. In my experience, a weak ground wire can cause problems. I would double check joints and make sure the plug is completely inserted.

Thanks Cole
I rejigged the jack nut so it sticks out a bit further, and now the jack goes all the way in. Now the volume and tone knobs work, but in the middle position the both pickups seem to respond together to whichever knob I turn. Not as individual pickups, but together. The neck pot does crackle when turned, so I suspect a faulty ground there, or possibly I cooked the pot when soldering.

I'll look into those two possibilities and see what happens.

Thanks again

Re: Mustaine Livewires problem

Glad to read that you got one thing fixed! Still sounds like you have a grounding issue though, whether that be a toasted pot or a cold solder joint. Good luck in finding the culprit!
