mxr distortion+

how does the mxr distortion+ compare to the boss ds-1?

They are 2 different animals....The MXR is more fuzz sounding...The DS1 is a distortion device, more gain, more modern tones by comparison...I think of the MXR as early 70s sounding(Think Foghat)...The DS1 is more JCM 800 sounding.

Re: mxr distortion+

gotcha... i'm just so used to people saying
"______ is just a souped up version of ______"
that I assumed the dist+ was based off of something or vice versa

Re: mxr distortion+

John pretty much nailed it.

The MXR *is* definitely "fuzzier", but it's not like a fuzz face or such...

But I think I like the MXR better as a goose than the DS1. (stock) DS1 adds a thickness that really makes for some mud with buckers if you've already got a healthy amount of gain going before ya kick it in. I think it works better with single coils.

Re: mxr distortion+

The MXR Dist+ is more similar to a RAT than anything. I'm not too fond of it though. Too thin sounding for my taste. Yes, I know Randy Rhoads used one but he also used a MXR EQ to fatten things back up again.

Re: mxr distortion+

Based on my experience, MXR D+ does not sound good through Marshall amps. It sounds muuuuch better through a fender amp.

Tone wise, MXR is smoother and sounds like fuzz-marshall.

Re: mxr distortion+

Basically the MXR D+ is a primitive, early overdrive/distortion device, that like the RAT uses a single sided 741 opamp to generate it's gain...It's not a fuzz pedal in the true sense, but it offers a fuzzy and almost grainey type of tone that I don't care for....I built my own RAT that is killer though, and I did a bunch of tweaks on it to make it alot smoother and less "Ratty" sounding...

Re: mxr distortion+

It is the same circuit as the DOD 250, gets it's grit from the diodes. It evolved into the Tube screamer (and the Boss OD) with the addition of a tone circuit.
The distortion + was the thing in the late '70s, everybody used 'em. I used to pair it up with the MXR 6-band EQ.

Re: mxr distortion+

Or, another way the two pedals have been described:
Boss - Awesome totally flexible must own pedal that almost everyone can find something to with.
MXR+ - Sucks, mostly for most people

Re: mxr distortion+

I owned an MXR Double Shot a long, long time ago. One channel was the Distortion + and let me tell you, STRATDELUXER97 tells the truth, it's fuzzy and grainy and kills any dynamics you had in your setup. I can't imagine it working well as a boost, you might as well get out a DOD Grunge pedal and save some money in the process.

The Doubleshot has only been out since 2002 or 2003. One side was not the Distortion+ but was a new circuit that was supposed to be more "classic sounding." The other side was the Dime Distortion with the severely scooped mids.
I used a Dist+ for yearrs and I still have a soft spot for it, but I must concur that it's not the most versatile or pleasant sounding box. But running it through a Fender Champ turned up all the way (with a Morley Power Wah Boost driving it) made me the heaviest guy in my junior high school!

The Double Shot MXR pedal was a horrible pedal and I was unable to mod one for a forum brother because it has "micro-technology components" on the board...He sold his and moved on to better pedals...The Double Shot to me was just crap!
