So I have an Analogman modded Phase 90 HANDWIRED '74 script logo. True bypass modded, with DC power jack, internal effect level/output boost trim pot, and a ratio pot to adjust the prominence of the phase vs dry mix.
I noticed when playing clean, it sounds phenomenal, very lively. But when turning it on when playing leads on a cranked plexi with a lot of gain it seems to go more subtle, and if anything the tone loses a bit of brightness/attack...
I always was under the impression that the Phase 90 was used by guys like EVH, lynch, Gilbert to make the leads cut through a little more and make an easier more prominent/trebley pick attack (similar to a way pedal pushed down past the halfway point of the sweep) yet I seem to lose some of the cut and pick attack when it is engaged, even with the internal VOL boost trim pot set pretty high.
The trim pot helps avoid the volume drop on the stock unit and the phase swoosh stands out more, however i'm still getting that slightly flatter/duller picking response... its like i lose some of the bite. it is definitely not making playing 'easier' as i feel I have to pick really hard to get the notes to stand out as much.
Is this because the pedal has a high output impedance therefore some tone suck is exhibited when the pedal is ON, Or is this because my High gain modded plexi amp is compressing the living crap out of the phase90 tone? As i understand it the phase 90 has a similar kind of sound as a wah pedal, with the cancellations producing a filtered sweep. However, my phase 90 seems to border more towards the Toe up/half cocked position of a wah as opposed to the toe down
i had to sell my mXR eVH flanger for a similar reason because using it in front of the high gain amp resulted in a subtle flange tone due to the amp distorting the flange effect and thus killing that super jet plane sweep that I love! I heard Eddie used his MXR POST-amp using a dummy load box but unfortunately i don't have an FX loop in my Plexi and i don't want one either ...
please share your thoughts,
i can install a simple output buffer circuit myself idk you think this will help restore some treble when the pedal is active... However, if it due to the amps tubes/gain killing some of the Phase 90 effect then I'll just have to live with it!
