MXR ZW-44 Vs. Boss SD-1?? User reply!!

I have the SD-1, use it thru my mesa for a lead boost and hotter tone, does take away some bottom end but also tightens things up.. I hear the ZW-44 has more bottom and less mid hump. I like to use it for rythem and lead stuff. Is it much of a differance from my Sd-1. Also looking at an OCD for the above purposes and as a stand alone unit on my clean channel.

opinions? Alternatives?

I think you'd be better getting the sd-1 modded then getting a ZW-44 with mods you can do alot with the sd-1 (dependent on the mods) indyguitarist and robert keeley are well known modders.

Yeah, right now I'm looking at a SD-1 Keeley Ge 5 star mod with diode switch, a Fulltone OCD and the ZW-44.

The MXR/Dunlop overdrive has more distortion, but the SD-1 is the real thing. I think Zakk likes the Boss better, but he has a contract with MXR. He even has his MXR Wylde Overdrive modified for use in live performances. I prefer the Boss, between the 2, but I am not really into Zakk'z music.

The ZW-44 is a clone of the SD-1. The ZW has more drive, is voiced a little darker, the tone control behaves a bit differently (more noticeable change in adjustments) and it has no output buffer.

I have a ZW-44. It's my favorite overdrive/booster next to my TS-9DX, which is currently busted (a new one is on the way). No, it will not make you sound like Zakk Wylde at all, but it is a nice clean booster (I don't use the drive at all).

I have noticed that with the level up and drive down on both of them, the SD-1 has more of a boost than the ZW-44. The ZW has more of a buffer type of affect on the signal, bringing back more sparkle where as the SD-1 will give a noticeable boost. I wonder if that is due to the reverse taper drive pot in the ZW.

Also check out Monte Allums DIY SD-1 mods if you are handy with a soldering iron.
