My 80s Japanese Fender resists modding.

This is an 84-87 e series Fender Strat Standard, ST362 7.25" radius Rosewood. I bought for my birthday in March (I was born in 85 so I'm taking it to be a birth year guitar) I was very happy with it in the shop:

As you can see I opened it up thinking t was one of the legendary ones with US electronics but no, it was all the "cheap" electronics. I was diappointed at the time. So I tried to mod it, changed the pickups for Custom 54s I had. I actually preferred the stock ones. They lovely low output, smooth and warm, I find that the 54s were a bit too trebely and harsh for my ears. so back in they went. I tried to change the ugly black string trees, but completely changed the feel for the work.

I've just tried to put in a full sized Trem block from a Mexican series one, (the Japanese one is tapered). But alas foiled again. Different sizes. the Japanese one is wider. the whole trem system is a different size.

The only things that have stuck is adding the tone to the bridge and changing the green capacitor for an old .05 ceramic disc one. doesn't sound any different.

It must be telling me it's perfect as it is. I must accept it as a wonderful sounding and feel guitar and play it.

Do anyone have any information on these anyway? I can get information on the reissues with the "correct" appointments of trees alnicos etc, or the Contemporary Floyd Rose esque ones, but not these. what wood is the body, it's very light. It doesn't matter relaly I'm one of those who like to know everything about my guitars.

I'm not sure about the specifics but I can tell you those japanese Fenders from the 80s are arguably the best damn guitars Fender ever made. I used to have a Performer and wish to God I hadn't sold it. It was a great, super-versatile axe but a clean used one now goes for more than I would ever pay for a solidbody guitar.

I presume it's made by Fujigen and generally speaking Japan made guitars are basswood.

The neck pocket of my FGN looks similar to yours and it's basswood.

As for the cheap electronics, even the hi-end Ibanez Prestiges come stock with those boxy swithces and alpha pots. At least yours have stood the test of time!

If you really want to know what kind of wood it's made from, call Fender Consumer Relations and ask them. With the serial number, they can tell you what it is. 1-800-856-9801 (US Toll Free) 1-480-596-7195 (International)

Unpotted pickups, non-RWRP? They're probably really similar in spec. to the ones I pulled from my Jaguar; it's been so long since I did that, that I don't really remember what the old ones sounded like.

I've done quite a few mods to my 90s Japanese Jaguar, and I always meant to do more, but I've stopped for the time being considering that it sounds really good (really only have the pots and some metal hardware and tuners I someday mean to replace.) It is annoying that certain things on the Japanese guitars are just slightly off: Pickguard shapes, contours, spacing between polepieces for covers, size of screw holes on hardware, thin/rough chrome over flimsy metal, not to mention the super cheap wiring and pots. On top of that, I've always felt the 80s models are the MIJ Fenders that are actually any good, and the rest after are sort of hit or miss as far as quality and sponge off the earlier reputation; poor quality frets, sloppy inlay work and ugly, open-grained rosewood seem typical. But the routes etc. on your body look so clean...

After going through CTS, Fender, Bourns, and some other I'm not sure about, I've come into conclusion that Alphas are the best pots out there...
