My black Gibson 490's for your hotter pups

Like the titles says. I was thinking something like jb/jazz, sh-5 / 59, or something similar. Nothing too hot, I just want a hotter paf type tone so I can get a good 80's 90's trash metal sound. Reg space needed. I prefer nickel cover but anything would do. Not interrested in rusty, dirty looking pups and the neck pup need to have a good amount of lead.

Don't have anything to trade you for, but you might want to try swapping some magnets on you 490's, Gibby USA pickups respond tremendously to a change in magnet grades.

My personal favorite is an A5 in the neck and an A4 in the bridge for a great "hot PAF" tone. A small ceramic magnet works extremely well in the 490T if you need a more aggressive bridge tone, and the A5 works well to cut through the mix.

Lt. Kojak here highly recommends an A8 in the bridge as well. I haven't yet tried that, but I'm about to.

Just a thought.

Yeah, I tough about that, but never tried mag swap before. It's a idea I still have, but still wanting to try to trade them instead. Do you have any good sites where I can find a step by step stupid proof method ? Any good places to order those mag ?

I gotta leave for work, so i don't have time to find it, but there is a tutorial on how to do it on ProjectGuitar.com. Pretty sure there are some threads in here somewhere as well.

It really is dead simple, takes ten minutes to do, maybe 20 if the cover is still on.

Re: My black Gibson 490's for your hotter pups

Maybe I'll try it. Anyone know a good place to buy the mags ? Feebay ?

Not looking for any trades, but I have a Custom, and a Custom Custom, both single conductor with Nickel covers for sale (and a potted Burstbucker 1/nickel cover too) if you are interested.

Re: My black Gibson 490's for your hotter pups

I have a zebra bridge position SH-14 (Custom 5) with right at 1' of lead wire. I've measured it at 14.13k.

works fine. just not my flavor.

OK dude, the A5 in the 490R is greatness, one of my favorites, like a slightly darker '59 with more mids, it works in the bridge too. I never tried the A5 in the 490T, but it should resemble the A5 490R.

The A8 in the 490T was pretty similar to a Super 70, so you might like it, I didn't. Apar111 actually has my old 490T, so he can probably add some insight, I didn't play it much.

Get mags here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/addiction-fx/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562

Here's a tutorial: http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/barmagswap.htm

Gibson pickup polescrews actually thread into the baseplate, so you'll need to actually remove them all the way to get access to the magnet, the baseplate won't loosen with them in even with the brass screws loosened. Duncan's and most others do not thread in, so you can usually skip this step.

Be careful to not yank any wires, especially while taking off the outer layer of tape. Plenty of n00bs have killed pickups by taking it all the way apart and not being careful.

Re: My black Gibson 490's for your hotter pups

thanks. I'll check that out. In the meantime, keep sending me your trade offer

Re: My black Gibson 490's for your hotter pups

Bumpy. Could trade the bridge only if you have a custom 5 (black or nickel)

Re: My black Gibson 490's for your hotter pups

Bought a bridge pup. Looking for a neck black pup that will be a good match for a SD distortion
